    • Hal-Con

      Mar 2009 - Dec 2019

Shifting from Chair to Executive Director, my focus was on short and long term growth strategy, developing and reinforcing internal framework, and day-to-day operations of the festival. Under my direction, between 2016 to 2019, the event grew to a new venue allowing change from 6,500 unique people to nearly 10,000 over the convention weekend. Additionally, I secured grants from the Province of NS - Communities, Culture, Heritage giving Hal-Con the opportunity to create year-round content. The 2019 event (my 10th Hal-Con convention) had a total attendance over 18,000 people. Show less The biggest "little" con in Atlantic Canada, focusing on science fiction, fantasy, comics and gaming.I have directed the convention for six years, growing it from an idea to 8000+ attending in 2015. With planned expansions, we will see as many as 12,000 in 2017 once Halifax's new convention centre is available to us.As the creative visionary behind this event, I've shaped it from a concept to being a community installation year-round instead of a singular event. It's now part of the Halifax landscape, attracting tourists from all over the world to take part in this truly unique event - blending the very best of traditional science fiction conventions with the most modern "ComicCon" practices. I've been involved with every aspect of the event; exhibitors, advertising, press, volunteer recruiting/training/managing, programming and scheduling, guest management, sponsorship & funding management, advertising, plus so much more. Currently, I oversee a team of 30+ committee volunteers, manage two teams and am responsible for attaining the vision for the future of the convention. As the leader of the largest "ComicCon" east of Quebec, I have shared my knowledge with start-ups to help fledgling events claim their own opportunities to create communities. Working in concert with other shows across Atlantic Canada, I am working towards building a bully-free, welcoming and body-positive environment for all at these events. Show less
