Learned how to use modern equipment and apparatus, developed problem solving skills and used scientific software and programming languages (MATLAB, C++, Excel) for data/error analysis. Presented the results clearly in reports and presentations using academic format (Latex).• Keen interest in Atmospheric and Earth Science. I studied optional courses such as Meteorology & Atmospheric Physics, Climate & Energy. • Consolidated my programming skills with courses such as Computer Techniques and Object-Oriented Programming in C++. The final project for the latter was a program to store and perform transformation on polygons. It received a first class mark. Show less

The award was based on an essay I submitted about the use of algae as a bio-fuel, linked to my professor’s project. My interests and curiosity induced me to follow external courses: - Introduction to Waves, where I learned fundamental principles of wave dynamics. - Public Speaking, for which I delivered three speeches; the course also helped me obtain an A+ in my Cosmology final exam presentation. - Physical measurements. Planned the 6-week project and built an automatic toy car together with a partner; in particular, I programmed the sensor to work with the chip. Show less

    • Centro Velico Caprera

      Jul 2009 - Jul 2013
Aiutante di Vela (Volunteer Sailing Teacher Assistant)

Role and responsibilitiesInitially, in 2006, I started at this sailing school as a student; after 3 years the instructors recognised my potential and, after a training course, I became an instructor assistant. The role is to assist the instructors' team and bridge the gap between them and the students. My responsibilities are to board one of the boats to direct and teach the students while having other boats follow my leadership and keep the group compact.Skills and knowledge acquiredThe hierarchical structure of the school made me understand how to work in an intermediate position between the students and the instructors; this allowed me to understand the importance of communication and team working. Communication is important to discover discontentment and problems in both groups, team working is essential to make the course run efficiently. As a result of carrying out this role successfully, I have been invited to take a training course to become a first level instructor. Show less

      - Greeted and welcomed international students arriving in Manchester, taking care of making a good first impression for my university. - Answered any questions they had while they waited for the bus; patience and communication skills were needed to overcome some language barriers.- Worked together with the dispatch team to load and organise the luggage in order to simplify the unloading at the many stops made. Over 1000 students used our service that week.

      Research Engineer Student

The placement in the company was arranged within the context of the IDCORE engineering programme to perform industrially focused research. The project revolved around researching and designing a floating platform for the offshore deployment CCell wave energy device. Review of the available literature was performed on similar concepts (Aquamarine's Oyster, EB Frond), on physics of wave-structure interaction, analytical-empirical-numerical modelling methods etc.Among the skills and task performed were developing an analytical model of the proposed designs, setting up and running CFD numerical simulations in OpenFOAM, analysing results by developing R scripts and documentation. I have a World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s Aeronautical Meteorological Observing (AMO) and Aeronautical Meteorological Forecasters (AMF) accreditation.I deliver forecast products and weather briefs to fast jet pilots, helicopters and other airfield users. I prioritise my work according to weather and customer needs.I am an effective team player within the small Valley office team; we divided tasks and engagement duties with the airfield customers between colleagues. I am proactive at taking additional work when required.I developed my communication skills as a trade union representative. I have been able to juggle my daily job with union duties to represent and bring forward members issues with management/HR and look for satisfactory solutions.I can work flexibly to accommodate business needs- I have completed detachments to numerous UK locations (e.g. Lossiemouth, Northolt, Belfast) both in-person and remotely. Show less I was featured in the video promotion advertising the role https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWfCh_S0_owI worked as the only meteorologist at the Saint Helena Airport producing local forecasts and liasing with airport operational staff and pilots. Indipendent, self driven work with the limited observation and computer model data (internet connection is limited as it comes through satellite link)I provided meteorological forecasts to support routine flights and also ad hoc emergency medical evacuation in a timely critical mannerI collaborated with the media team to produce a marketing video to advertise the role of meteorologist.I produced public forecasts for the island community and answered questions and requests. Show less I volunteered to work as an Operational Meteorologist in Mount Pleasant Airport in the Falklands Islands. This is a challenging but rewarding experience given the remoteness, the lack of weather observational data compared to the UK and the limited broadband reducing the available model data for analysis. Here I monitored and forecasted the weather for day-to-day operations and for non-routine emergency flights (medical evacuations) prioritising and working under pressure. I delivered forecasts and weather warnings to remote locations such as mountain sites, harbours and the Stanley airfield. I also delivered forecasts to the general public via radio scripts, radio interviews or via phone calls from the general public. While I was there we were affected by short-staffed issues due to difficulties in finding volunteers and delays due to quarantine requirements to prevent Covid. Here I implemented changes to my work routine and took on more responsibilities to allow the Senior Operational Meteorologist role to work from remote. Show less
