Deep, profound and thorough study/practice takes most human beings to a place most others cannot imagine. Normally, when I tell this tale, folks look at me strange - "You are not serious about being an organic molecule, are you?"Since my personal experience, I've learned about the 10,000 hour rule - if you want to become a master (of most anything) study/practice for 10,000 hours. This is transformational. Show less

      Avionics Division Officer

Naval Flight Officer who earned his daily bread by being shot off an aircraft carrier, the USS John F Kennedy (now decommissioned.) I was a member of VAW-125 once I received my wings (flight training was from January 1970 through July 1971) and deployed with this squadron as part of CV-1 aboard the Kennedy.During my second deployment in 1973, was designated an Officer of the Deck - Underway - the only member of the air wing CV-1 to have said "I have the deck!"Without the Navy, it is unlikely there would have been Harvard Business School in my future. • Mission Critical Software

      Jun 1996 - May 1998
      Chief Financial Officer

Was one of six (6) co-founders of this system software company that went public in August, 1999; it was ultimately acquired by NetIQ. Responsible for all the administrative work of the company including accounting, human resources, facilities, office and treasury management. Successfully completed two venture capital financing (Series A and B) and secured short-term loans.Served on the Board of Directors and had the unusual experience of voting myself out of a job. The Board decided to look for a new CEO to take the company public. The CEO candidate had his favorite CFO, which is the usual case, so in voting to hire the new CEO, I made myself history - a rare experience in deed.As is the case in most startups, there is more work to be done than is humanly possible. Many things get put off to "some day" while secretly praying that "some day" does not show up any time soon. I worked on my birthday in 1996; it was a Saturday and amongst other things, late in the afternoon, I interviewed a woman for the position of Office Manager. To my surprise, we both were leaving the building at the same time even though the interview was completed many minutes before. I told her she was my birthday present, and she smiled. Of course, I offered her the job and she accepted. Show less
