The opioid system is important in the neuronal homeostasis of the sensory and cognitive function. Chronic stress is able to generate changes in the neuronal homeostasis; producing increment in c-Fos expression, reduction in GABA-A receptor activation and overactivation of the NMDA receptor. Chronic stress is able to generate changes in the neuronal homeostasis; producing increment in c-Fos expression, reduction in GABA-A receptor activation and overactivation of the NMDA receptor. All those changes produce stress-induced hyperalgesia. Likewise, repeated exposure to swimming stress induces a long-lasting hyperalgesia. Since the opioid neurotransmitter system modulates pain, the selective blocking of opioid receptors with opioid-receptors antagonists’ naloxone and naloxonazine, previous to each session of forced swimming, prevents hyperalgesia. Naltrindole and nor-binaltorphimine were inactive. The efficacy of morphine to produce analgesia in a forced-swimming model was lower than in a sham-swimming model. In conclusion, the forced swimming is able to produce overactivation of the opioidergic system inducing long-lasting hyperalgesia. Show less

Activities and Societies: Rugby team The reactive oxygen species (ROS) participate in signalling pathways that are important in maintaining homeostasis of neurons. Angiotensin II (ANG II) influences blood pressure via its ability to stimulate the NAD(P)H oxidase. Consequently, ROS such as superoxide are produced, which are sequentially metabolized by the enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase; producing oxygen and water among other molecules. ROS in turn, can activate the MAPK pathway that is associated with growth and cellular differentiation. To establish the intracellular mechanism by which ROS mediate neuronal ANG II actions in cardiovascular regulation, we assessed (in vitro) the role of angiotensin AT1 receptor, protein kinase C and NAD(P)H oxidase in the angiotensin II-induced pathway of antioxidant enzymes and MAPK. The structures assessed were related with cardiovascular response; the hypothalamus, the sub-fornical organ and the adrenal medulla. Show less
