Final Year Project Abroad (Master's Thesis) Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering

Activities and Societies: Master's Thesis Developed at ISAE-SUPAERO during the final year of my MEng Aeronautical Engineering degree on the University of Glasgow; on the topic of “Optimisation of Aerofoils for the Atmosphere of Mars”. Project aim was to find the aerofoil with the highest lift-to-drag (LD) ratio in these flow conditions. • Primarily involved using CFD methods: 2D Direct Numerical Simulations on STAR-CCM+, as well as a few 3D cases, of very-low Reynolds, high subsonic Mach number flow on NACA 4-series airfoils, using an extremely fine mesh, simulation run on a multiple core cluster.• Investigated lift and drag behaviour in this aerofoil series for flow characteristic typical of those found on a small UAV flying through the Martian atmosphere. Comparison between CFD and Xfoil results.• Aerofoil… Show more • Primarily involved using CFD methods: 2D Direct Numerical Simulations on STAR-CCM+, as well as a few 3D cases, of very-low Reynolds, high subsonic Mach number flow on NACA 4-series airfoils, using an extremely fine mesh, simulation run on a multiple core cluster.• Investigated lift and drag behaviour in this aerofoil series for flow characteristic typical of those found on a small UAV flying through the Martian atmosphere.
