  I undertook an eight-week internship, funded by the Wellcome Trust, with Alastair Grant, Professor of Ecology at UEA, titled 'Will vaccination save us from COVID-19? Reinfection, asymptomatic infection, and herd immunity?'. It was an insight into working in epidemiology and public health, where I furthered my statistical skills and learnt how to use R. Throughout my internship I did the following:- determined the change in the relationship between infection from COVID-19 and hospitalisations across age groups over time. - used data from peer-reviewed literature on vaccine efficacy in combination with mathematical models to predict R numbers for a variety of scenarios accounting for vaccine used, varying transmission levels, and variants.- created a SIR model, accounting for a decline in immunity to allow for reinfection, in order to determine a range of equilibrium scenarios of weekly infection rates within the population.At the end of the internship, I presented at the UEA Bioscience Summer Research Internships Symposium.   Working collaboratively with colleagues in Cambridge and Gothenburg as an intern in Quantitative Solutions, and the Decision Making Tool workstream, within Early Biometrics and Statistical Innovation at AstraZeneca.Developed my programming skills through upgrading of a decision making tool within R, used to aid stakeholders in driving the development of clinical compounds. Liaised with statistician leads on clinical trials to obtain study scenarios to test and validate the tool, whilst also gaining knowledge on the role of statisticians in clinical trials. Show less
