      Jul 2014 - Apr 2015
      Conservation and Habitat Officer

Working for Open Space was a varied and interesting job. My main role was peatland restoration. This involved felling trees, chipping the brash and removal of the timber off the site. It was followed up by sensitive weed and rhododendron clearing/spraying. This was mainly carried out during autumn to spring. I would mainly be using chainsaw and spraying equipment but also a Softtrak, Mini digger, chipper and Quad bike.In the summer months I would carry out wildflower meadow restoration such as planting and sowing wildflowers and trees. There was also wildflower seedcollection/sorting/propagation to be undertaken. At other times I would be carrying out bat surveying. Garden landscaping and maintenance. Machinery maintenance. Tree work. Erecting fencing. Show less

      Ground and Maintenance

When I first joined Patterdal Hall there hadn't been a gardener for over 30 year. The gardens were in a poor state. The flower beds were neglected full of weeds and self seeded trees and shrubs. The paths were almost unrecognisable. The glasshouse was very rotten and in a bad state of repair. I spent several years restoring all of the aspects to something quite different and respectable. Not only was there a large garden but 80 acres of fellside and woodland. My job was split into two parts the outside which required general garden maintenance. (Strimming, weeding, mowing, etc). Tree planting and general tree work. Plant propagation, growing and planting. Hanging basket and container planting. General building works. (Rebuilding dry stone walls, repairing and making new doors, etc). Machinery maintenance. Estate work. (Erecting fences, repairing paths, removing invasive species, etc)Then there was the indoor part to my work which included caretaker duties. (Changing bulbs, decorating, drainage, general repairs, etc). Standard compliance. (Water temperature and water hygiene tests, fire alarm/extinguisher/emergency lighting tests, vehicle checks.)
