      Educaion and Outreach Assistant

During my recent internship my main duty was to educate members of the public on the marine environment. This involved numerous outreach activities such as: going to schools where we took along marine creatures to teach the children, setting up displays and taking the animals to maritime events, running educational camps for teens and kids, and taking guided wildlife tours of the coast. Several of my other duties include: social media posting, website maintenance, feeding the animals and cleaning their tanks, and training and supervising a volunteer. In this position I was responsible to the director of marine dimensions and in my role as an intern the volunteers were responsible to me. I aided in training the volunteers to make sure they had sufficient knowledge of the marine environment about the most common things asked by people. Show less

The field team specialises in aquatic ecological and hydro morphological survey work throughout the UK with sampling and monitoring of lakes, ponds, canals, rivers, estuary, coastal and marine environments. Day to day activities may include hydrometric monitoring, macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality testing and sampling, accurate data entry, equipment maintenance and calibration with stringent quality control systems implemented at all times. Ad hoc activities may include assisting the laboratory scientists from time to time carrying out chemical and biological analysis on samples taken during fieldwork, under the supervision of one of the senior scientists. Additional work included writing tender summaries for completed projects and making maps to be used by the field team to correctly sample in the field. Show less

Undertaking surveys of aquatic habitats to be impacted by an infrastructure expansion plan being undertaken by NI water. From the data collected I would designate what types of work can be carried out in each habitat based on their likelihood of it providing suitable habitat for salmonids. In addition, I ensured all the correct forms are completed to be in compliance with legal directives.

      Image Analyst

Undertaking quality assurance of work completed by other staff, assessing their work to ensure correct sightings and that there were no missed sightings. When sightings had passed QA, I prepared the images for the identification and tagging phase, factoring in the camera type and positioning. I identified positive sightings to their lowest taxonomic level, while providing identification assistance to other staff particularly in regards to cetaceans and elasmobranchs. Additionally, I would screen images when there was a high work load, there had been mistakes by other staff or the survey conditions were too complex for less experienced analysts Show less

      Jun 2018 - Sept 2019
      Assistant Scientific Officer

Undertaking ecological surveys for a variety of projects to meet statutory requirements including the WFD. These included, electrofishing, bathymetry mapping of lakes and invasive riparian species monitoring. During several surveys I managed junior staff members, delegating duties and responsibilities depending on the needs of the project. On completion of surveys I analysed data collected and wrote reports for completed projects. In addition, I wrote short summaries of each survey to be used both for public and inter-department reading. In addition to specific survey reports, I wrote reports on broad scale topics including the impact of invasive species within the catchment and the future impacts to be expected, as well as impacts of migration barriers and their broader context within river systems. I took part in a joint habitat restoration project between a local farmer, local angling club, the Sea Trout Trust and Loughs Agency, which was designed to protect the farmers land from erosion, while promoting sea trout recruitment through habitat improvement. Prior to undertaking field work I ensured all equipment necessary for particular surveys being undertaken were prepared including sampling equipment, PPE and electrofishing kits were fully charged and operating optimally.
