Jun 2009 - Aug 2009InternConducted various observation studies in clinical areas to identify work flow and system constraints. Developed Excel Spreadsheets to track and sort data. Used statistical tools and lean tools such as pareto charts, process maps and spaghetti diagrams to identify system flow barriers. Assisted in the development of presentations to clinical leaders. Worked independently with the Audiology Clinic on a focused lean project aimed at improving access to care, reducing non-value added activities and delays within the clinic flow. Jan 2010 - Jun 2011Successfully designed a kanban system used for inpatient dietary replenishment, decreasing staff time spent ordering and checking on supplies. I also implemented a similar kanban system used for patient exam rooms in primary care to reduce the time providers spent obtaining supplies during clinic visits. Designed multiple engaging training sessions focusing on lean topics; 5S, Process Mapping, Value Stream Mapping, Lean Jeopardy, Poka-Yoke and Plan, Do, Study, Act Cycles which in turn exposed over 136 employees to lean concepts. Facilitated 5S in work environments to help increase staff productivity and decrease the non-value added time spent looking for supplies. Created an Erlang Law model to help determine appropriate staffing levels in the local call center based on several variations of anticipated calls. Facilitator of local improvement team (Patient Aligned Care Team) and active member in the following improvement groups; Bedside Care Collaborative Team, Customer Service Committee, Telephone Workgroup, and the Scheduling Directive Rapid Process Team. One example of improvements made in Audiology is through space utilization estimated $850 yr. cost avoidance and clinic flow savings equaling a 0.5 Full Time Employee. Assisted with the North Dakota State University Midwest Mountain Veteran Engineering Resource Center research collaboration by providing information, resources and editing task deliverables.
