  Worked on a project involving the synthesis and characterisation of Vanadium oxo-diperoxo metal complexes possessing a range of polypyridyl (PP) ligands for biological application. These PP ligands allowed the complexes closer access to the double helix of DNA by hydrophobic intercalation, affording the peroxo moiety the opportunity to generate localised oxy-radical induced DNA damage. When DNA damage outweighs repair in cells, cells die and this dogma can be implemented in cancer therapy drug design. Show less

  Research Scientist- effect of diet and lifestyle on DNA damage biomarkers

  I was responsible for isolating DNA from the blood of newborns and their mothers and analysing DNA fro the presence of markers of DNA damage. The levels of DNA damage were linked to the diet and lifestyle of the mother, where a correlation between maternal and fetal DNA damage levels were established.
