      Human Factors Engineering Lead for civilian and military research, test and development projects ranging from aviation (manned and unmanned) to cyber security to homeland protection to modeling ship safety with machine learning. Maria has presented and published research results both nationally and internationally. Principal Investigator for UAS simulations. Developed scenarios and wire frames of displays and controls requirements derivation for the Navy and Air Force. Completed development of minimum operational performance standards for safely flying unmanned aircraft in the National Airspace System (NAS) including automation of collision avoidance. NATO human factors specialist team member for NATO Joint Commission Group – UAS. Directed simulations and experiments for DoD and FAA. Trained and surveyed pilots and air traffic controllers throughout operational evaluations of prototype systems deployed to airports and radar control facilities to improve flight safety and efficiency. Also led the human factors research for the Squad X program sponsored by DARPA. Maria served as flight test director for NextGen air traffic control projects, including runway status lights system (RWSL)which has been deployed at several NAS airports, and the enhanced final approach runway occupancy systems, and for UAS NAS integration, collaborating with pilots and air traffic controllers. Member of RTCA special committees SC228 and SC147 developing standards for UAS collision avoidance. Certificates completed for project management, leadership and user experience. Mentored STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) high school teachers and university student interns. Volunteer judge and mentor for additional STEM activities including INSPIRE, a national high school research competition in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) at MIT and the Aviation and Maritime FAA STEM.
