Out of the store, I supported the founder with design work for print and the web, web content creation, and knitted display samples. In-store, I ordered, received, and processed merchandise, attended customers and led introductory-level knitting and crochet classes.

      Library Assistant

I still have the Christmas cactus a student gave me. Seeing students develop and helping them do that either behind the scenes with programs and policy or up front in the stacks was one of the most rewarding parts of this position. I don't have a library science degree, but at this position I had meetings once per semester with a senior librarian at Warren Wilson College. This position pushed me into taking classes at A-B Tech. The library sort of existed on the perimeter of students' minds. Data shows a high degree of correlation between time spent at the library and overall student success. So, I asked for and received essentially a blank check to overhaul the library's visual identity and change some of the library's rules to make it more student-friendly. First I removed all the rules-signage from the front door. Students didn't read it, so it didn't serve a purpose outside of alienation. I designed a logo and painted it on the door. I updated our print materials to use the logo and some simple branding. I received a locking cabinet and converted it into a book display with some battery-powered LED lights. Finally, I framed and installed a whiteboard in the student computer area. With the two new display areas and the new, more integrated identity, I raised student visitation by 45 to 50%.In addition to the library overhaul, I handled circulation, reference and writing assistance, IT support, reader's advisory, and led library skills/orientation sessions. I also researched, ordered, and cataloged additions to the collection. Show less

I integrated founder stories and business goals into logo and brand identity that I completed as part of my coursework at A-B Tech. Then I continued, delivering bimonthly issues of the magazine for limited distribution in print and online until the App State students who were the other members of the managing team went their separate ways.
