Biomass Technology Group was investigating the cofeeding of pyrolysis oil in existing refineries in Sweden to create renewable fuel. Three aspects were of importance in the assignment:• Effect of pyrolysis oil on the final product• Advantages and disadvantages of the cofeeding of pyrolysis oil• Renewability of the final productIt was found existing methods were not optimal for a realistic view on the sustainability and potential new methods were suggested and recommendations for the future were given. Master Thesis

During the master thesis the effect of a ferrofluid on microfluidic liquid-liquid extractions was determined using a model system (extraction of oxygenates from heptane to water). This is a novel method to allow for counter current extraction at microfluidic scales in the future. The research was divided in the following parts:• Literature research• Synthesis of ferrofluid• Design and construction of co-current extraction setup with the help of technicians• Batch extraction and co-current extraction experiment• Setup of theoretical model for mass transport• Analysis of the resultsDuring the experiments the evaporation of the solute proved problematic. By adding cooling to the setup, the evaporation was minimized. The experiments showed the effect of slug flow on the extraction. Based on the results further studies are being carried out at the research group Show less
