Urban Water Engineer, Storm Water, Sanitary Sewers, Urban Flooding and Climate Change Consultant at DHI

  • Education

    • Universidad de Costa Rica

      2000 - 2007
      Engineer's degree Civil Engineering

Studied Civil Engineering at the University of Costa Rica. With an special focus on structural engineering due to the intensive seismic activity of the country. Seismic construction and hydrology were also of special attention during my Engineer´s degree time of study.Thesis degree tittle: “Develop of Quality Verification Lists in the Construction of Urban Infrastructure Projects”.

    • Danmarks Tekniske Universitet / DTU

      2012 - 2014
Master of Science (MSc) Environmental Engineering Technology/Environmental Technology

Focused on Urban Water Engineering. MSc thesis in : "Evaluation of Strategies for urban flood risk reduction in Copenhagen".

      Project Engineer

Assistant Engineer in the construction and elaboration of budgets of wastewater treatment plants for agricultural industries. In this job the major task was to redesigned and build an already approved wastewater treatment plant contract for an agricultural industry without varying the biochemical process in the design, but reducing the total costs, during the rainy season in Zarchí, Costa Rica.Inventiveness and financial engineering were develop within this work, due to the urgent of reducing overall costs of the project but keeping the quality of the final product. The treatment plant was a Twin continuous stirred tank reactor, which initially was conceived to be built with high resistance poured concrete in walls and slabs, finished with polished concrete. When considering Costa Rican high seismic activity value engineering never should be focused on reducing reinforcement, therefore the reduction of costs was focused on reducing the construction period and rearranging the walls configuration. Covering of the construction site with low costs large plastic roof was improved and the poured walls were changed to fully filled masonry blocks keeping the original reinforcement. With these modifications a reduction of a 25% of the original cost was achieved.http://www.gaiacr.com/ Show less

      Project Engineer

Project engineer in construction development in Guanacaste, Costa Rica during the real estate boom period in 2007.In this job my tasks were to guarantee that the construction process of 16 residential condominiums, 16 stores was achieved on time and fulfilling the quality standards claimed by the clients. I was in charge of total costs control of the process and budget, payment control of subcontractors and material supply management. Given the high seismic activity of Costa Rica a construction of this kind is regulated by the Costa Rican Seismic Design Code, therefore practical expertise was developed on top of the theoretical knowledge acquired in my civil engineering major degree.Management of large groups of workers was a must in this project. Most of the workers employed were unqualified manpower with low scholarity therefore trying to transmit ideas and concepts in an easy mode was a common activity every day. As a result my communication skills were improved.Due to the short amount of time available to conclude the project, coordination with subcontractors, stock retailers and electric and mechanical engineers was crucial leading to a constant improvement of teamworking. Civil Engineer

Engineer in charge of the operation and maintenance of potable water systems.Tasks: Supervision and optimization of rapid filtration drinking water treatment plant in a location prone to suffer from river flooding. A rapid filtration plant was built in 2007 in Jaco. It started operation in 2008 but the river where the uptake was sited constantly experience flash and river floodings this caused interruptions in the service and create a danger environment for the public servants who worked there. By implementing a series of small anticipation ponds built with gross river bed materials scaled up along the river; flooding of the uptake was avoided. The result was the implemention of a preventive maintenance program of the water uptake and a more constant production of the treatment plant.Water supply planning and managing the issuing of licenses for water extraction: a balance between high real estate demand for water rights and hydraulic system capacities was achieved "During the post American Real estate blooming period in Costa Rica. Optimization of the water production was obtained by implementing simple changes in the operation of the Drinking water treatment plant-Pumping station scheme. Hydraulic modeling was used to identify critical pressure zones and optimise pressure control driving into higher economic revenues and greater hydraulic capacityResults were a better monitoring of water demand for urban projects and the coordination of water safety plans.Maintainance of main pipelines and underground water well-pumping systems in the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Member of the Central Pacific Coast Emergency Committee as representant of the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers. Some of the tasks assigned were coordination and management of the population facing the cyclones and floods. Evaluation damages suffered in public infrastructure. Execution of response strategies in order to reestablish the water and sanitation services during floods. Show less

      Candidate in MSc Environmental Engineering

I enrolled in DTU for the MSc Environmental Engineering program to improve my knowledge in the environmental field. In DTU I have been introduced to State of the Art modelling tools of water environments mostly developed by MIKE powered by DHI.MSc Thesis is specialized in modelling of urban water floods due to cloudbursts and Climate Change in the City of Copenhagen in collaboration with Rambøll A/S . Evaluating adaptation strategies to buffer these future expected damages.
