  During my school years I worked at the weekends managing the butter, cream and milk production lines, ensuring that the products were made to the high standard that Ivy House Farm consumers had come to expect from the product. It was a challenge to manage a team of young adults that were a very similar age as myself, but I feel that I managed to keep everybody motivated and on-task throughout my time in this role.

  Work Experience

  Whilst at agricultural college, I completed a week of work experience in the market office at Frome Livestock Auctioneers. It was a good networking opportunity and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, organising market entries, sorting passports on market days, and helping to write the market report.

  Work Experience

  Whilst at agricultural college, I completed two weeks work experience at Mole Valley Farmers, Frome. This provided me with a good insight into the products and services offered by MVF to farmers and small holders. I particularly enjoyed my time in the farm sales section, looking into feed and fertiliser products and services available, and how these are marketed.

  I was fortunate enough to be provided Waianui Farm Ltd in New Zealand as a contact and I reared their 1,000 Friesian X and Jersey X dairy calves during the block calving season. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and found calf rearing to be a challenging yet extremely rewarding job.

  Relief Milker

  I milked 900 cows, mainly on my own, twice daily through a 60 point rotary parlour for a dairy season in New Zealand. My daily routine included arriving at the cowshed at 3:30am to clean the bulk tanks after the milk collection, ensuring the bulk tanks were set-up for milking, starting the plant and carrying-out the milking. Then I assisted my employer with the treatment cows at the end of the milking and washed through the plant. The afternoon milkings were much the same although the bulk tanks did not require cleaning in the afternoons. Milking by myself encouraged me to use problem solving initiative in certain situations, and I enjoyed the challenge, having not experienced this level of responsibility before. Show less

  I reared 300 dairy calves and covered some milkings in the 40/20 herringbone parlour in between returning from New Zealand and starting my degree at Harper Adams University.

  I was flattered to be asked to return to New Zealand to rear calves for a second calving season. I reared 1,000 Friesian X and Jersey X dairy calves in a block system during the University summer holiday. Team working played a large part in my time at Breadings Dairies Ltd as the calf feeding had to coincide with the milking times; I was reliant on the milk from the herd to feed the calves. My responsibilities included colostrum management, teat training and feeding of all calves, the tagging of bobby calves as well as preparing them for collection, and vaccinating any sick calves which, fortunately, was very few.   Dairy Assistant

  I assisted with the training of the cows through the four new DeLaval robot milking machines for one week during the University Easter holiday. This involved monitoring the computers to identify which cows were due to be milked, selecting those cows from the yards and bringing them to the robot as they settled into the new system. By the end of the week, I only had to assist a handful of cows as the majority had learned the new system which was very rewarding to witness.

  A 15-month placement in industry as a trainee rural accountant with Old Mill as part of a BSc (Hons) farm business management degree course at Harper Adams University.
