    • Borneo Nature Foundation

      Jan 2019 - Sept 2019
      Graduate Student Researcher

For my MbyRes degree, I collaborated with Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya (UMP) to conduct my project which investigated the diversity and morphology of non-volant small mammal species. To complete this project I spent 9 months living in Borneo and conducted 5 months of fieldwork in the Rungan Landscape rainforest in Central Kalimantan. For three consecutive weeks of each field month, I conducted daily capture-mark-recapture surveys of small mammals so I am highly trained in catching, handling, measuring, identifying and marking such animals. As a preliminary study, it was also my responsibility to create the protocol and methodology, organize and obtain the required equipment, select survey locations and train local field guides and students from UMP who helped with data collection throughout this project – the majority of whom did not know how to speak English. Terms of the collaboration also included attending scientific conferences organised by BNF and delivering several presentations to UMP lecturers and students which emphasized the aims of my project and some of the results pre-analysis. This experience greatly advanced my fieldwork ability as well as my leadership and communication skills. Furthermore, being immersed in a completely foreign culture, broadened my mind and revealed completely new viewpoints and perspectives. After this experience, I am confident in my ability to design, conduct and report scientific fieldwork, as well as interact and empathize with people from different cultures and ages. Show less
