  Whilst delivering shots for "The Matrix" and "The Matrix Reloaded" Animal Logic was commissioned to produce Australia’s first animated feature film “Happy Feet”. This project required a growth and scale previously unseen in the film industry in the Southern Hemisphere.My role was to design, implement and scale core compute, storage and network infrastructure services. High power density DC design and scale was a new and unknown challenge for Sydney’s premier co-location facilities. High Performance Computing (HPC) lifecycle management and infrastructure services at this scale required lightweight open source tools to achieve operational performance and cost targets.Platforms and tools included IRIX, Windows, OSX, Linux, Netapp, Foundry / Brocade and a host of open source tools.   Director George Miller and team returned with the audacious vision of not only delivering his “Happy Feet 2” sequel but to also build an Animated Feature Film Production Studio, Dr. D Studios.Our journey began with a focus on the operating model and bootstrapping core IT services. A foundational technology tenet of the studio was the use of Open Source software for the production pipeline, artist desktops and the sizeable render cluster.Ultimately, I would be accountable for the design, delivery and scaling of the Co-location hosting facility, core infrastructure and IT services.The successful delivery of the film at a cost of US $135m was achieved through close collaboration with Executive Management, team leads, many exceptionally talented people and through an adoption of early agile methodologies and culture.
