      Story Teller

I sometimes tell stories from my life experience. I stand in a public forum or designated space to keep story-telling alive as best I can. Did you know that it is story-telling that separates us from other animals? We are the only species known (so far) that deals with time past and time yet to be.

    • Harrisonburg League of Therapists

      Jan 2008 - Jan 2011
      Intensive, In-home, occupational therapist

Although the Harrisonburg League of Therapists closed its doors, as an occupational therapist, I am available for consultation and contract-based occupational therapy services within my community on a fee for service basis. I offer clients my skills to improve their abilities to cope with and/or improve their quality of life. I educate children and parents to better understand one another's needs and assist parents to be prepared to offer their child/children the activities that are developmentally most appropriate for them at any particular developmental age. I also assist elders when they are attempting to down-size and make their residences safer and more functional; especially in light of issues of progressive aging and degenerative dis-eases. I am available to assist adults of aging parents and those parents, as they must engage in some difficult conversations regarding issues of aging in place (Ex: driving, independent living v.s. assisted living, home-safety, etc.). Legal Observer

Legal Observers are called upon to bear fair witness when issues of concern arise to the level of protest (civil disobedience and/or community actions). We observe, record and act as a neutral presence during engagements of public demonstration wherein authority and demonstrator warrant observation to ensure appropriate actions by all participants. Our observations and records (whether written notes, photographic or/and video recordings) are considered "work product" and may be used in support of legal actions in courts of law.(from the National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer Manual 2003)The primary role of the Legal Observer is to be the eyes and ears of the legal team--toobserve and record incidents and the activities of law enforcement in relation to thedemonstrators. This includes documenting, for example, any arrest, use of force, intimidating display of force, denial of access to public spaces like parks and sidewalks, and any other behavior on the part of law enforcement that appears to restrictdemonstrators’ ability to express their political views. This documentation needs to bedone in a thorough and professional manner, so that lawyers representing arrestees orbringing an action against the police generally will be able to objectively evaluate theconstitutionality of government conduct. Information gathered by Legal Observers hascontributed to an extremely successful track record in defending and advancing the rightsof demonstrators, including in criminal trials and several major lawsuits against Federaland local governments for their unconstitutional actions. 2The presence of Legal Observers serves as a deterrent to unconstitutional behavior bylaw enforcement during a demonstration. Police officers are often deterred fromengaging in unconstitutional activity when their actions are being documented. Show less
