Process/Equipment Engineer with Experience in Manufacturing

  • Education

    • Utah State University

      2012 - 2015
      Mechanical engineering Mechanical Engineering

Activities and Societies: Gymnastics Club Prepared for a career in mechanical engineering by taking a variety of classes. My greatest focus was on classes about fluid dynamics and heat transfer. I enjoyed a class on renewable energies the most. I also worked on finding and testing a suitable motor for an automated sailboat for my senior design project.

Mechanical Engineering Student with a focus on heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and renewable energy

Projects include:Motor Selection and Failure Testing• Our customer wanted a lightweight, powerful, small, and cheap motor to utilize on his robotic sailboats. This motor needed to output high torque at a low speed. These requirements were impossible to meet so we conferred with our customer and provided the best options according to his criteria. He tweaked his requirements and we chose the best option. We then created a test stand using 2 of these motors, one to drive and one to provide resistance, and proved that our chosen motor met all the customers new required specs.Wind Farm • Calculated average wind speed at 60 m based on an average wind speed at 20 m and created a Rayleigh distribution of continual estimated wind speeds based on this average. Calculated estimated power output of two wind turbine models using these estimated wind speeds and a set of actual recorded wind speeds. Compared the actual wind speeds with the estimated wind speeds. Calculated how many of each model would be required to create a 60 MW capacity wind farm and which model would create the greatest profit. Electricity Micro-Grid • Estimated the energy required to power a civic building, a health clinic and some schools, homes, and woodworking shops in a small village in Zambia. Researched to find the most cost effective products for small-head hydro, solar and diesel power, and for inverters and batteries. Using “Homer”, determined options to power the town utilizing the different power options. Optimized the plan by reducing net present costs over a ten year period.Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger• As part of a team, designed a shell and tube heat exchanger capable of transferring 200,000 btu/hr. Optimized the design to minimize material costs. Calculated pressure requirements for the pump. Ensured that the heat exchanger would still meet requirements if the heat rejection fluid was decreased by 10% and/or after fouling effects decreased efficiency. Show less

      Mar 2016 - Jun 2019
      Equipment Engineer

      • Managed equipment improvement projects leading our team and working with the vendor team as we troubleshot new issues with a worldwide first of a kind machine. Worked closely with process engineers to ensure product quality stayed high as we increased tool availability.• Spearheaded multiple tool install/deinstall projects working with facilities and directing vendor work. These were complex multi-million-dollar tools often requiring over a dozen facilities connections.• Ensured that these tools were installed safely and ready by the expected date.• Area cost engineer – managed the brainstorming, planning, reporting, and completion of various cost savings projects across my area (our area achieved the completion of over $25,000 in weekly savings in my last 6-month period).• Designed an assembly and led initial prototype testing to replace vendor equipment and to improve process quality. This part’s initial cost is 60% less than the vendor’s part and maintenance costs are 65% less.• Increased tool availability by 14% in the year that I owned the tool-set.• Set up fault detection and SPC strategies to monitor the health of my equipment.• Resolved long term down events through troubleshooting with research of vendor documents and schematics, experimentation, and intuition• Led and facilitated focus groups on solving the most challenging problems• Designed a tool to make maintenance safer, updated the procedure, trained the team and won the “Good Catch of the Month” award.• Troubleshot a chronic alarm, finding the root cause, and eliminating 80% of the frequent alarms to lead my team to win the “Core Team of the Month” award. Reducing the noise allowed us to focus on the real problem tools.• Updated procedural documentation (over 30 procedures) to ensure effective, error-free completion of productive maintenance and repairs. Jun 2020 - Dec 2020
      Engineering Consultant

      • Designed a conveyor belt cleat to replace the current prototype. This new cleat added functionality, simplified manufacturing, reduced stresses in the parts and eliminated 2 failure points. I also led the prototyping and final alterations. • Determined the stresses in each part and weld of a conveyor and offered suggestions for increasing the strength of parts and welds with safety factors lower than what I would deem acceptable.
