      I left school at 16 I found a job at Firestone initially fitting tyres, balancing wheels and soon moved onto servicing car engines, brakes, clutches and suspension. I was enthusiastic about doing this in the Army but was told my math wasn't good enough. I loved my time at Firestone, I learned a lot and that knowledge remains with me today.

      Joined the Coldstream Guards in 1980. I was a recruit instructor from 1986-1989 and then promoted to Sergeant. I was a Platoon Sergeant during the first Gulf War and after that I was promoted and moved to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an Instructor, training Officer Cadets.

      At J B Riney Ltd I was a working with a team on projects and quickly promoted to site manager responsible for civil engineering contracts in Kent. I would coordinate staff, plant and equipment for drainage, duct work, footways and carriageways. Liasing with Local Authority Highways on progress and variations on orders.

      Responsibility for recruiting staff and training stewards using the FLA Training Book adapting lessons for other types of events like Horse Racing, Motor Racing and Music Events. Ensuring that staff did not work until formally trained in Module 1 of Steward training. On site I would brief, position and manage staff on the ground at venues like Twickenham, Ascot, Brands Hatch, Chelsea Football Club and many more.

      Responsible to a Manager installation of temporary radio communications systems to venues like Silverstone, Ascot Racecourse and Southampton Boat Show. Site visits and coverage tests to advise on frequency management and what would suit the site. Also, operating radios in control rooms during major events.
