One of the many projects conducted through the PRC/MI is the Youth Empowerment Solutions (YES) project, which is the project that I worked on during my internship. YES is an after-school project for youth in grades 7-8 in which they complete a community project, and follow a curriculum for developing leadership skills, community pride, program planning, intergenerational communication, and cultural awareness. During this internship, I helped further develop the curriculum and prepare it for copyright, created multicultural variations of the curriculum for different populations, attended and helped facilitate the teacher training for the YES teachers and site coordinators, and surveyed youth from middle schools in Flint. With this work, I wanted to better my knowledge of community-based research, gain more experience in surveying and evaluation techniques, and expand my familiarity of working with populations of different ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities, which I feel was all accomplished by working with the PRC/MI on the YES project.
