  •Extensive scientific diving techniques were learned to enhance skills and knowledge in field data collection.•Planned, coordinated, and executed group dives and a project measuring the swimming velocity of tadpoles at different water temperatures.•Gained experience diving in hard and soft-bottom ecosystems•Skills included: counting freshwater mussels using quadrats, search and recovering techniques, operating lift bags with various weighted objects, multitasking with a stop watch, a slate, and measuring tape, assembling objects blindfolded, and assessing transect line measurements. •Excellent swimming skills were utilized including a 25-meter under the surface swim on one breath, a 400-meter swim in 8 minutes, and treading water with no hands for ten minutes •Extensive dive emergency training procedures were enforced as well as completion of the DAN Diving First Aid for Professional Divers providing top-notch training in CPR, first aid, O2 administration, diving related injuries, hazardous marine life situations, and neurological assessments.
