University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
2022 - 2025Bachelor of Engineering - BE Mechanical Engineering
Milwaukee Area Technical College
2003 - 2004Associate's degree AccountingAfter having worked as an actuary after dropping out of Ph.D. school, I was studying for a career change into accounting but then went back into higher education, starting with teaching math at MATC.

University of Wisconsin-Madison
1988 - 1992Bachelor of Science (BS) Mathematics and PhysicsActivities and Societies: Physics Club, Aikido Club

State University of New York at Binghamton
1994 - 1996MathematicsI was working on a Ph.D. in smooth manifold topology but didn't graduate. My research interests (a little ill-defined then) were manifold topology, but, when I finished classwork, I worked briefly with a professor in geometric group theory. I also got GRE credit for the 1st actuarial exam, took some statistics courses and passed the 2nd actuarial exam, and studied for the 3rd actuarial exam.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
2005 - 2015Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) MathematicsActivities and Societies: Strategic Gaming Club (Dungeons & Dragons/RPGs) My Ph.D. is in smooth manifold topology. I graduated May 17, 2015, in the Spring semester

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
1992 - 1994Master of Science (MS) Mathematics
University of Wisconsin-Platteville Center for Distance Learning
2019 - 2020Master of Engineering - MEng Control EngineeringI was working on an MSE in control engineering but dropped out to get a BSME in mechanical engineering first.
Experience

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee
Sept 1992 - May 1994Teaching AssistantI taught freshman math courses (typically, 2 sections of the same course, for a total teaching load of 6 credit hours a semester) while working on my Master of Science degree.Courses taught:• Math 095 Beginning Algebra

Zurich North America
Jan 1997 - Jan 1999Actuarial AnalystI worked in actuarial pricing, first in middle markets commercial insurance, then in large accounts property. In middle market commercial insurance, we mainly did 2 semi-annual reviews of the profitability of our books of business, comparing premium dollars coming in the door to claims dollars going out the door, adjusting the statistics to ultimate loss levels and trending loss numbers to expected levels over the new exposure period, computing "loss ratios" (claim dollars paid out/premium dollars coming in), adjusting again for expected claims payout patterns and investment income on claims dollars expected to be paid out well after the time premiums are collected, and then comparing the final implied internal rate of return to the company's cost of capital to keep the company profitable, so that we would neither go broke from losses, nor have our investors think our actual company's return on investment isn't worth our industry's risk, sell all our stock, and have our market value plummet like a rock to $0.00 :)We also worked with Compliance to justify the rate increases we recommended and Underwiting and Management approved to the state Departments of Insurance (DOIs).Other than that, we just worked on ad hoc projects: an underwriter would have some "small" book of business, and we'd use our spreadsheets/computer programs/etc. from the Major State Reviews to do "little reviews" of their target market program. Instant Auto Insurance
Sept 1999 - Oct 1999Product AnalystI worked on new state rollout. Instant Auto was a new, growing personal auto insurance company, so we were constantly trying to begin writing business in new states, and I assisted with gathering data on the "market conditions" in those states and did some work on the ratings tables for those states (but not much work on the ratings tables).

Meadowbrook Insurance Group
Jan 2001 - Jun 2002Actuarial AssistantI worked in middle market commercial insurance actuarial pricing. We mainly did 2 semi-annual reviews of the profitability of our books of business, comparing premium dollars coming in the door to claims dollars going out the door, adjusting the statistics to ultimate loss levels and trending loss numbers to expected levels over the new exposure period, computing "loss ratios" (claim dollars paid out/premium dollars coming in), adjusting again for expected payout claims patterns and investment income on claims dollars expected to be paid out well after the time premiums are collected, and then comparing the final implied internal rate of return to the company's cost of capital to keep the company profitable, so that we would neither go broke from losses, nor have our investors think our actual company's return on investment isn't worth our industry's risk, sell all our stock, and have our market value plummet like a rock to $0.00 :)We also worked with Compliance to justify the rate increases we recommended and Underwiting and Management approved to the state Departments of Insurance (DOIs). I once made a really huge spreadsheet that had all the data you could possibly want to do a California filing (California has a legendarily hard "prior approval" review process - they were probably the hardest in the nation, with Texas a close second): you just selected some drop-down menus and filled in a few fields on the first couple of pages of the spreadheet, and then you just hit "Print" on the next 5 pages or so - the "print pages" were formatted to look just like the DOI's forms, and I never had a complaint from the DOI about not using their official forms. [Edit: It would be fun to try to reproduce this in WAMP.]Other than that, we just worked on ad hoc projects: an underwriter would have some "small" book of business, and we'd use our spreadsheets/computer programs/etc. from the Major State Reviews to do "little reviews" of their target market program.
