Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Pulsed Electric Field to separate water-oil systems Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

      • My PhD project was on using Pulsed Electric Field to separate water-oil systems which has applications in crude oil treaters / desalters. I started with an R&D project/opportunity on electro-separation of water-oil dispersions, which is of interest to oil companies. Some water would get dispersed into the oil. I started with an R&D project/opportunity on electro-separation of water-oil dispersions, which is of interest to oil companies. Some water would get dispersed into the oil. The water phase has to be separated from the oil, due to corrosion of pipelines and process equipment, increased viscosity, and deactivation of process catalysts by the water content. • Therefore, I evaluated the technical feasibility of applying electro-clamping method to coalesce water drops in oil, and the resulting larger water drops could then be easily separated. This electro-separation method is also environmental friendly, as de-emulsifier is not required. I had also successfully developed a novel electrocoalescer-separator, as a result of my fundamental investigations, and set up and performed bench-scale experiments to assess its performance. • Global Process Systems

      Jan 2003 - Dec 2007
      Senior Proposal & Process Engineer

      • As Senior Proposal/Process Engineer, I had successfully prepared many process equipment proposals, including produced water treatment (PWT) CPI, hydrocyclones, induced gas flotation (IGF), nutshell filters units, 2-phase and 3-phase vertical and horizontal separators, electrostatic oil treaters and desalters, TEG Gas Dehydration process, etc. My work included process design calculations, heat and mass balances, and process equipment sizing and costing.• Some of my achievements included successfully preparing technical and commercial proposals for process equipment packages for the oil & gas industry. Firstly, I reviewed, interpreted and qualified the instruction-to-bid (ITB) documents from customers. Then, I designed and sized process equipment packages, including produced water treatment hydrocyclones and induced gas flotation (IGF) units, vertical and horizontal water-oil-gas separators, TEG Gas Dehydration process, etc. My responsibilities also included preparing all corporate documentation, and performing tender risk registers, and HAZOP studies. • Keppel Offshore & Marine

      Jan 2008 - Dec 2009
      Senior Process Engineer

      • As Research Engineer, I helped DPS Bristol Ltd (a Keppel subsidiary) in developing oily water treatment technologies, for various applications in oil & gas industry, water treatment industry, and municipal wastewater treatment. • Working closely with engineers at DPS Bristol, we successfully designed and developed innovative produced water treatment (PWT) equipment, such as the high-flow, low-pressure drop de-oiling hydrocyclone, the rapid Free Water Knock-Out (FWKO) Separator, the Radial Media Filter (RMF), the 5-phase HydroLoc Centrifuge, and the new de-sanding Hydrocyclone. Based on my previous experiences and my PhD work, I made further improvements on the performance and operation of these separation technologies in meeting international specifications. I also conducted technical and financial feasibility studies on our new separation technologies, showing positive outcomes.• I had also completed my assessments on the Electrostatic Oil Treater-Desalter technology and the TEG gas dehydration technology of DPS-DELTA.• One of my achievements included providing consultancy services in process design to various business units in Keppel Corporation, such as Keppel Shipyard, Keppel Singmarine, Keppel International Engineering, Keppel Seghers, etc. For example, I had successfully designed a storage tank and a multi-media filter for the water recycling project at the Keppel Singmarine’s Benoi shipyard.• Transferred to DPS Malaysia to assist them in process engineering work for the offshore oil & gas industry projects, as well as assisting DPS Product Division in terms of technology development and technical marketing. I also travelled to DPS Bristol UK to work together with the product development engineers there. DPS Product Division focuses on products and technologies in produced water treatment, sand management, bulk separation of water-oil systems, electrostatic dehydration and desalting of crude oil, TEG gas dehydration system, etc. Show less

    • Cameron, a Schlumberger company

      Jan 2010 - Jun 2015
      Senior Process / Specialist Engineer

      • I was senior specialist engineer for electrostatic desalter-dehydrator technology for oil treatment, water-oil treatment technologies, with applications in oil & gas industries, refineries, oil treatment and produced water treatment. • I was also seconded to CAMERON Abu Dhabi to provide process engineering supports for the West Qurna II Oil Treater and Desalter project for ExxonMobil Iraq Ltd. This utilized my knowledge and expertise in water-oil separation and technology during my designing of the process and equipment for this project.• I was also transferred to CAMERON Japan office (former NATCO Japan) for one year, to assist them with process and equipment design and engineering for oil-water separation work. I had worked with them in the design, engineering and operation of oil treaters and desalters, induced gas flotation (IGF) units, nutshell filters, hydrocyclones, etc. I had also successfully completed technical proposals, process and equipment design and engineering, site service work, and business development activities for electrostatic desalting and dehydration of crude oil, and produced water treatment projects.• I also worked as Lead Commissioning Engineer for four CAMERON oil treaters and desalters at YASREF (Saudi Aramco) Refinery in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. The commissioning work was completed successfully for the client. The electrostatic dehydrators/desalters are used to treat crude oil to achieve the required salt content and BS&W specs. I had also trained the Aramco engineers and operators on the proper operation and maintenance aspects for the desalters.• I had successfully completed the mechanical maintenance work for the Cameron EDD Desalter for Mizushima Refinery, Japan. In this work, I had inspected the composite electrode plates, and replaced some broken plates. I had also inspected other process internals, such as the insulated hangers, conductor cables, feed inlet distributor, vessel internal corrosion, etc. Show less
