      Sept 2000 - now
      Coordinator

The most rewarding part of my job is the close interaction I have with students that allows me to develop a real relationship with them based on mutual respect and common goals. The pillar of my work at the program is Housing Services: maintain contact with recommended housing providers and landlords in order to provide students with leads and advice on their housing for the academic year or semester. Close contact is maintained to ensure fair conditions and legal obligations to be met.One of the most gratifying components of my work happens at the beginning of each semester and can be summed up as Orientation Services: Upon arrival I run several orientation sessions with students: Housing Search, General Safety, Extra-Curricular Activities, Culture Shock preparedness and six weeks after arrival an Intercultural Learning Workshop. Currently I am expanding my training in Intercultural coaching in order to further explore the possibilities of this area in my work.Throughout the year I spend a large amount of time providing student services, including student activities and welfare, goal setting and periodic goal meetings to identify the students' progress, extra-curricular activities for students such as English clases, intercambios and volunteering and personal appointments that cover a wide range of topics. The last but not least important component of my work is office administration and the preparation of student legal documentation and paperwork for the student residency process, as well as staff support for the Directors in many areas. I teach two translation courses in the English-Spanish Translation Masters Program at the Complutense University of Madrid. In Inverse Translation I, students learn to develop the skills they need to translate from their native language into a second language. Our focus is on journalistic and literary documents and putting into practice techniques and resources learned about in the program. In Inverse Translation II the focus is on the translation of more complex documents: economic, technical and legal texts. Here the focus is on identifying sources to consult, the use of precise terminology, and the difficulties that arise when translating them into a second language. Show less
