    • House of Detention

      Jan 2003 - Jan 2005
      Detention Officer, Physical Education Program

As a detention officer and a physical trainer at a male penitentiary, I was responsible for designing and participating in physical training, sports-related activities, and health services for inmates. It taught me how to lead effectively in a potentially hostile environment while providing aggression management and offense prevention training to inmates, many of whom had behavioral challenges. These skills were a foundation on which I have built upon throughout my career within the police.

    • Another World

      Jan 2004 - Jan 2007
Youth Development Group Leader for Disadvantaged Youth

I spent over two years working with special needs children as an independent group leader and eventually as the chief youth leader for the program. “Another World” organizes camps for youths with behavioral challenges. Because of my outdoor training and social work education, I set up weekend and holiday programs where structure, physical activity, and having fun were the main focus while equipping these young people with valuable life skills and increased confidence through the activities they were participating in. I also worked within 24/7 assisted living for teenagers placed into court custody and needing short-term emergency housing. My interactions within this role taught me valuable communication skills, which I later relied on, and a deep understanding of the circumstances that lead to young people committing crimes. For example, there were selection programs for school captains, programs for improving group processes such as teamwork and prevention of bullying, and programs to increase children's self-confidence. I am certified in and have taught mountaineering, caving, kayaking and rock climbing, environmental education, and river rescue, all activities that facilitate the essential skills of resilience, communication, self-direction, and critical thinking. • Politie Nederland

      Jan 2007 - Jan 2016

I was the project leader in implementing information and data management programs across all 17 police precincts throughout Amsterdam. As project leader, I was responsible for the newly established information exploitation and processing system, implemented country-wide to promote intelligence-led policing initiatives to help various communities with their crime issues. Within the project, my focus was to amplify current successful data-driven crime-fighting methods while at the same time integrating anticipatory policing strategies more effectively to create a community infrastructure that facilitated crime reduction. The project is now a mainstay of the strategic plan for the Amsterdam Police and serves as a national model. I also worked at bringing together national developments in crime anticipation. I developed a framework for the various police departments nationwide to build and test in the communities where support was most needed. I worked within the regional command to instill the ethos of proactive protection for vulnerable people and locations at risk of crime. See the link to the video I produced on the project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOr2Ac6qiyg. Show less I served as a subject matter expert on the operations management process for senior precinct staff, helping to advise on how to structure to most benefit communities hit hard by crime. I acted as an integral member of the precinct strategic management team for the Diemen/Ouder-Amstel precinct. This suburban precinct deploys 80 police officers and covers 24 square miles with a population of 40,000. I primarily provided legislative and research analysis and managed contracts and covenants for the precinct. In this capacity, I was the primary liaison to local government, drafted the precinct’s annual standing plans, and coordinated incident and event calendaring. While in this position, I also developed processes for the sharing and safeguarding critical information. Show less As the adjutant inspector Zuid-Oost, Amsterdam, I performed administrative and supervisory functions supporting the intelligence chief. I also supervised the development of intelligence-driven products that provide support during police mobilization. I was the project leader on a pilot focused on crime anticipation. In addition to my regular work, I assisted the Personnel Department in the delicate and challenging process of reorganizing the regional police forces and their eventual integration into the new National Police force. During this time, I also volunteered to serve as the project leader on a new initiative for solving crime through the innovative use of new media. Within the reorganization framework, I acted as a change agent. I led a team that brought together representatives of the former regional police forces and the Public Prosecutor to develop cutting-edge methods to use social and traditional media to further major national investigations. Show less As a sergeant, I was selected to coordinate a successful pilot project on employee participation in problem-solving. In this position, I initiated a series of workshops that spearheaded the development of a more bottom-up approach to seeking viable solutions to the police department’s issues. The process I developed, aided by collaborative meetings of employees across the rank structure, utilized “Flip-thinking” methods and experimented with ideas derived from subject matter expert Berthold Gunster’s “Yes-But®” philosophy to improve rank agnostic problem solving and knowledge sharing. I coordinated all aspects of this program, from concepts through research, implementation, and evaluation, and ran workshops and seminars that produced tangible results. Some of these results included a new way for our supervisors and officers to conduct their daily operations briefings and a new smartphone application to aid in information sharing across the organization. Show less I was accepted into the primary police training academy in 2007 and received 2.5 years of training in criminal law, tactics, firearms, self-defense, community relations, and other basic police training. During the training, I worked patrol in the Klimopweg police precinct. Based on my academic and tactical performance, I qualified for an accelerated learning program where I could participate in a research project for the Dutch ROG team (Regional Wanted Criminals). During this period, I was also sent to New York and Washington, DC, to participate in an exchange program with the NYPD, the FBI, and the US Marshall’s Service. I completed my training program early and was accepted into the 2.5-year accelerated police academy program to compete for a Bachelor’s degree in policing in 2009. Show less

      Oct 2016 - now

I am privileged to serve as a Fellow at the University of Chicago Crime Lab. I am committed to fostering discussions and devising plans that enhance public safety, especially regarding the role and impact of policing. I am involved in developing the University of Chicago's Community Safety Leadership Academies (CSLA). This program is designed to train the next generation of leaders in policing and community-based violence intervention (CVI) across America. This project integrates data from leading academics and insights from behavioral science to craft effective curricula. It aims to be a rigorously evaluated public safety training available in the United States. Show less My previous role was Associate Director of Policing Innovation and Reform at the University of Chicago.Crime Lab. I executed strategic priorities focused on policing projects to enhance public safety inpartnership with law enforcement agencies in Chicago. In addition, I helped to develop effective strategies to reduce crime, drive performance, and establish long-lasting, positive relationships between the police and the community. I maintained relationships with Crime Lab partners, identified ways to leverage the Lab's unique resources, as well as help the Police Department deploy its resources more effectively and thoughtfully. The goal was to promote community policing to reduce crime and build strong, cohesive, vibrant, participatory communities with positive states of well-being for the people within social and physical environments. Show less During this time, I worked as a Research Associate at the California Policy Lab (CPL) based at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). I helped coordinate research projects for both CPL and LAPD and liaised between the two organizations. The projects we undertook were focused on reducing violent crime and helping to improve the lives of the residents of Los Angeles by solving the most urgent crime problems. We built a research lab that leveraged LAPD's personnel, resources, data, and technology to conduct high-impact research to guide policing practices locally and nationally, unlocking governments' ability to understand and better address the problems that they see on a daily basis within the families and communities they serve.Simultaneously, I worked as the project lead on a University of Chicago Crime Lab research and technical assistance project in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department. The Chicago Project is designed to improve the use of data with the aim of reducing violent crime. I was involved in this project since the beginning of Fall 2016, when I was engaged, along with a team of experts, as part of an ongoing U.S. Department of Justice effort to assess the crime-fighting capability and accountability process of the Chicago Police Department. Our combined role was to evaluate the causes of the dramatic rise in violent crime that occurred in 2016 and to develop solutions to combat it and restore a semblance of peace and protection to the city of Chicago. My role was to serve as the project lead on the Crime Intelligence Details, whereby I supervised the analysts and worked with officers to coordinate logistics, as well as support technical and physical plant improvements across the districts and areas involved.
