    • Henry Royce Institute

      Jun 2023 - Jan 2024
      Masters Student Researcher

Culminating in a Masters of Engineering Individual Research Project, awarded a mark of 84.65 %.Dissertation abstract: This study explored the development of a test protocol designed to characterise the galling behaviour of austenitic stainless steels. The intention of this test protocol was to be suitable to assist further research into alternative cobalt-free hardfacing alloys, designed to replace Stellite 6 in reactor pressure vessel (RPV) valve seat hardfacing in Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs). Several 316 stainless steel and Nitronic 60 galling test specimens were manufactured according to the ASTM G196 international test standard. Test matrices were designed to cover a wide variety of material and surface finish combinations for thorough testing of a new galling test rig and the test protocol. Several changes were made during the development of the test protocol, including redesigning certain galling test rig components, and the design of a new galling test specimen holder to ease surface preparation. Results suggested that the test protocol, and the galling test rig, were effective for characterising the galling behaviour of the specimens tested relative to each other. This allowed measurement of the applied torque during the test, the change in surface roughness, and identification of galling and wear features. Results are discussed in terms of the implications for the validity of the test protocol and the effects of surface preparation on the galling behaviour. Show less
