  I have had the opportunity to shadow three doctors in three various fields in order to explore the different specialties in medicine. I shadowed an advanced endoscopist, an oncologist/hematologist, and a cardiologist. I volunteer as a patient companion where I work with patients in the oncology infusion room. In addition, I conduct room visits for long term in-patients. My goal is to work with patients to make sure they are time in the hospital goes by smoothly and provide them with any support they may need.

  In my role as a residential assistant I work to develop a community that is diverse, inclusive and safe for residents by upholding university policies. In addition, I strive to establish strong personal relationships with my residents in order to become a resource for personal issues. Working with current biochemistry students in mastering biochemistry concepts through practice problems, group discussions, and reviewing material presented by the professor. Worked with current biology students to help master the biology content through group discussions and reviewing content presented by the professor in class.

  Assisted in Dr. Milligan-McClellan's lab in the molecular and cell biology department. Research focus of the lab was to study and asses the gut microbiome and DNA samples various stickleback fishes found in Alaska, in order to better understand how the microbiome plays a role in host immune response. As a research assistant, I utilized Cubit, PCR and Gel Electrophoresis in order to quantify, amplify, and purify the DNA sample to verify the presence of the DNA in the sample. In addition, I took unknown samples of microbes and conducted catalytic tests to identify the microbes present in the sample. Through further analysis of the DNA samples using 16S sequencing and the microbes present in the sample conclusions about the microbiome were made. Show less
