Development of CO2 reciprocating compressor – master's thesis

The development of CO2 reciprocating compressor was a topic of my diploma thesis. The goal of the work was to increase compressor COP, which was successfully done. Ansys WB was used for static structural analysis, modal analysys and CFD analysis. English was the language of the thesis. This was made possible because of cooperation between Brno University of Technology and Emerson Climate Technologies.

      Research Scientist

The work focused on the R&D of plasma-facing components for nuclear fusion. I took part in a few different projects, where I was in charge of structural mechanics and fluid dynamics analyses using Ansys Workbench and OpenFOAM. Nonetheless, projects were often approached by a team of computational specialists, mechanical designers, manufacturers and experimental researchers. The tokamak divertor mock-up development project was one of the most challenging problems due to the heat load it absorbs (up to 20 MW/m2). It required unique mechanical solutions to reduce secondary stress from high-temperature gradients. Once the component was finished, it was used for commissioning tests of high heat flux testing facility in a laboratory in the Czech Republic. The facility is used for the validation of first wall ITER components.A design of first wall samples for experimental testing of various cooling concepts considered for DEMO thermonuclear fusion reactor was the second project. Three designs were proposed and tested. These included counterflow pipes configuration, pipe with inserted twisted tape and hypervapotron.Other work I took part in was numerical calculations and development of radiative cooling concepts for the DEMO fusion reactor, and introduction of OpenFOAM software within the Research Centre Rez. Jan 2018 - Dec 2022

The main research objective was to develop and validate a numerical methodology to describe physics during immersion quenching, a manufacturing procedure used to alter metallic components properties. This metallurgical process consists of two major elements: metallic component temperature elevation and its rapid cooling. Due to the high-temperature range within the solid, four heat transfer regimes may appear when water is the coolant. That leads to very distinct cooling behaviour and complex physical phenomena. To fulfil the project aim, two computational regions, solid and fluid, were defined. These were allowed to interact and exchange information at their interface. Each region was governed by different equations, and fluid was allowed to boil. Frequent interaction with the C++ source code was necessary to progress beyond the state of the art. The software of choice was OpenFOAM. The project was done in cooperation with Aubert & Duval company and Advanced Forming Research Centre. Show less
