After being introduced to the basics of security in my previous project and developing a security mindset it was obvious for me to set the next steps into this magical world. Just at the right time there came an opportunity for a function in the Astrid security team as a security engineer. Astrid is the communication network for Belgian emergency and security services. In general my job consists of managing the security part of the network. This contains mainly of 2 parts. First of all our team does the maintenance of the security devices, solving security related incidenct, upgrades, patching are some of those things. The 2nd part is keep developing the security part, this contains implementing new access for specific services the customer wants to use. The security park consists of over 75 checkpoint firewalls, some Bluecoat AV/SG’s, juniper netscreens/SSL VPN, F5 ASM, ironport, and infoblox. In the future this will be further expanded. For all this devices we do the full package. Installation, maintenance of the equipment and adapting the rules etc on the devices to the customer’s needs. Show less The step from network analyst to security analyst was for me an important step in my career. Security is something I was already interested in when I was still going to school. So when I was asked for the job as security analyst I had no doubts to go for this new opportunity for the full 100%. Arcsight is one of the most important tools we use as a security analyst in Belgacom. This tool is a siem (security information and event management), which includes that traffic which is going through different security devices is sended to arcsight which triggers alarms depending on permutations that are done on the seen traffic, for this alarms some more investigation needs to be done to determine if the traffic is harmless, related to misconfigurations on the network or to determine some kind of attack is going on towards the customer network. Next to arcsight the implementation of changes is also an important part of our job. This is going from some basic changes to some more difficult changes. Checkpoint, Netscreen, Asa, Bluecoat, Srx, Infoblox, Ironport, Blucoat, Cisco switches/routers are some of the products, changes are mostly done on. This contains creating/removing/editing object/rules, whitelisting/blacklisting url’s/mail-addresses, vlans and routing. Show less As a network analyst, I was responsible for the explore monitoring for professional customers from Belgacom. Doing a first analysis on the routers/switches and internet lines, was here an important part of my job. The first analysis was for the greatest part on Cisco routers/switches and the Belgacom internet lines. I also improved the procedures to give a better support to the customers and created some scripts to work more efficient. This was also my first experience with ticketing systems as Clarify/Remedy and they are now familiar to me to work with. Show less
