I worked in one of the YO! ToGo kiosks based in Tesco, Milngavie. My role was to prep ingredients, prepare sushi rolls and ready meals as well as boxing these. I worked both with colleagues and on my own and have been in charge of running shifts on numerous occasions. By working with YO! I have gained valuable skills for the hospitality industry from back of house prep work, front of house, chef skills and the tasks of a kitchen porter. I did each of these tasks on a shiftly basis and this has aided my time-keeping skills immensely as well as this my role is highly customer facing so my confidence and communication skills have been boosted greatly too. In collaboration with students from the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Strathclyde, we had the opportunity to design souvenirs for the COP26 UN Climate change conference. This involved following a design process from initial discussions, through sketching, prototyping and manufacture. The photograph in my headline banner demonstrates the final design my partner and I chose; a series of Glasgow and COP26 themed bookmarks which were made from recycled stainless steel and were manufactured on a water-jet cutter. Show less I was selected along with 3 other interns to design a toolkit for students to help develop resilience. This project involved regular meetings and discussions with the team to ensure we were creating the best resources we could for the students of Strathclyde. My main tasks were to design and produce a range of resources to educate students on what resilience is, how it can be developed and why this is important. I made a presentation on Kenneth Ginsburg's 7C's of Resilience model, a series of templates to encourage goal setting and self-improvement and a collection of playlists on Spotify to encourage students to express themselves through music. As well as my individual resources I assisted in the creation and distribution of a survey to gain a better understanding of what students would benefit from in our toolkit and analysing this data into a final report. The work of all the interns has been collated to a Teams group which will be distributed to the students of Strathclyde later in the academic year. Show less

I participated in the Bright Network Engineering and Infrastructure Internship. This was a 3-day online experience in which I was able to listen to global market leaders, participate in a work sample task relevant to the industry and network with peers. I enjoyed hearing from companies such as PA consulting, Vodafone and Citrix as they helped me understand more about the industry I would like to work in. I thoroughly enjoyed the work Sample as it was a unique opportunity to be set a real-world task, related to the recycling process for PCBs and how it can be improved, and be able to explore the options of how to tackle it independently. Sushi Chef

My daily tasks include rolling, cutting, plating and serving sushi. During busy service I have to ensure that customers are not left waiting but that this haste does not affect the high-quality food and service they are expecting. This job has allowed me to develop excellent knife skills as well as experience working in a fast-paced environment. As one of the more senior members of the team I support in the training and induction of new employees to the company and engage in supporting their growth. These activities have required the development of strong communication and interpersonal skills. Show less
