Former Principal Test Design Engineer at Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions (CAES) (Retired)

  • Education

    • Lehigh University

      1975 - 1977
Master of Science (M.S.) Mechanical Engineering
    • Villanova University

      1969 - 1973
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Mechanical Engineering

Activities and Societies: Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma

  • Experience

    • Westinghouse Electric Corporation

      Aug 1973 - Jun 1975
      Associate Engineer

Gained a wealth of experience in commercial engineering practices by designing, analyzing and documenting a half-scale nuclear steam turbine rotor to be used in a scale model steam turbine. Assigned administrator for standard design manuals. A highlight was an in-service telemetry test of rotating turbine blades at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Station in Red Wing, Minnesota.

    • Lehigh University

      Sept 1976 - May 1977
      Teaching Assistant

Lectured several sections of "Statics" to mechanical engineering undergraduates using a text written by then-department head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University.

    • Mechanical Technology, Inc.

      Nov 1977 - Oct 1982
      Analytical Engineer

Utilizing the strength of my master's thesis, analyzed numerous turbomachinery dynamic and bearing issues through company-proprietary computer modeling and analysis. Lateral and torsional analysis and development of numerous power trains and components including compressors, turbines, fans, flywheels and heat pumps. Provided on-site countrywide consultation and ultimate resolution of dynamic field problems. DOE and EPRI publications. Was a lecturer in a company-sponsored Machinery Vibration Seminar generally conducted off-site. DOE "Top Secret" (Q) security clearance obtained. Show less

    • United Engineers & Constructors, Inc.

      Apr 1983 - Jul 1986
      Engineer

Principal duties were seismic qualification of mechanical and electrical components of utility fossil and nuclear power plants. An extensive effort to qualify all Class 1E Instrumentation mounting for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

    • Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions

      Jan 1987 - Dec 2015
      Principal Test Design Engineer

As a member of the Product Testing Laboratory team, was assigned to provide critical engineering support for multiple in-house product environmental test programs. Additionally, supported "commercial" product environmental test programs which were varied and numerous. Most programs were defense-related or COTS and utilized MIL-SPEC or customer-furnished test procedures. Generated test procedures and especially test reports which detailed test parameters and results. Maintained constant customer interface during testing and approval obtained when required prior to release of data.Accomplishments:* Sales - Since 1996, directly managed over 1000 commercial climatic and dynamic test programs totaling over $4.5 million in sales.* Mechanical Systems Design - Designed and supervised construction of a unique, large solar simulation facility designed for integration with a large "drive-in" environmental chamber located off-site.* Testing Specifications - Developed environmental test specifications for environmental tests to be used with our laboratory's test equipment.* Test Fixture Design - Designed numerous customer vibration and shock mechanical test fixtures, some utilizing numerically-controlled (CNC) machining.* Logistics - Instrumental in successful move of large temperature/altitude chamber from Baltimore, MD to Lansdale, PA.
