Child marriages in India are common despite the practice being illegal. Child marriages enjoycultural and social legitimacy and continue to be practiced as private affairs of the family when infact these constitute human rights violation of children.Child marriages are explained in existing literature through role of tradition, poverty and lack ofeducation. However the problem needs to be understood in terms of patriarchal mindsets that see girlchild as a burden and youth sexuality as a problem that may be handled through repression or childmarriage. There is a complex interplay of iniquitous structures that discriminate and subordinategirls and women, poverty, lack of economic options and lack of consciousness or sensitivity to theissue as a human rights concern.
