Research Officer & Graduate Student Clinician

Dr. Washington heads the PedLLS Outcomes Lab. In this lab, we engage in collaborative research regarding child language development and disorders. We apply theory to practice for the design and implementation of clinical research projects. Our goal is to expand the best practice evidence on outcomes that supports the worth of speech-language intervention for at-risk preschoolers. Our collaborators are internationally (Australia, Canada, Jamaica) and nationally located in fields such as education, engineering, linguistics, medicine, psychology, software design/computer programming, and speech-language pathology. Research in the Lab extends from Dr. Washington’s dissertation and postdoctoral work that was financially supported at the federal and provincial levels in Canada and Australia. We specialize in child outcomes using a bio-psycho-social theoretical model. We focus on assessment and intervention outcomes for different groups of at-risk preschoolers, including those who are multilingual and multicultural. Current research projects include: (a) investigating emergent literacy development in monolingual and English language learning Head Start preschoolers following a parent shared-reading program; (b) investigation of speech and language acquisition in Jamaican speaking children. This project is also associated with an Education Abroad Program Experience for students in Communication Sciences and Disorders to conduct speech, language and hearing screenings in Jamaica; and (c) evaluating the outcomes and predictors of outcomes of grammatical language intervention programs that incorporate visual support to address expressive-grammar deficits that are believed to be associated with information processing constraints in verbal working memory for young children with specific language impairment. For this project we are also establishing the broad-based impact of language-based interventions on other co-occurring areas of development in young children. Show less
