This voluntary experience opportunity allowed me to gain an insight into nature conservation at Allen Banks, Northumberland. In this role, I was involved in:• Helping the ranger team with practical work such as weeding, grass cutting, pruning, leaf clearance, path maintenance and tree cutting.• Improvement/maintenance of conservation and recreational sites to a high standard.• Data collection on biodiversity, habitats, grazing livestock alongside wildlife surveys and habitat improvement works.• Visitor engagement to explain and promote conservation work.• Assist with preparation and delivery of organised events. • Capturing photos and information of projects undertaken by the Ranger Team for use in presentations, press releases and National Trust internal communications. Undergraduate Dissertation - Independant Geological Field Mapping Project

Grade achieved: 68%My dissertation involved a 6-week independent mapping project of the Carrock Fell Igneous Complex in the North Lake District, followed by a 6000-word thesis write up. My studies examined the structural, geological and complex petrological evolution of the Carrock Fell Igneous Complex and associated hydrothermal mineralisation. Supervisor: Professor J. Godfrey Fitton.Key skills utilised: field mapping, cross-section sythesis, geochemical analysis (XRF and XRD), petrographic examination and software (e.g. ArcGIS, Inkscape, Stereoplots). Show less

    • Anglo American

      May 2018 - Sept 2018
      Geologist - MSc Dissertation

Grade achieved: 82% An investigation, in cooperation with Anglo American, into the nature and spatial distribution of base metal sulphides in the Platreef at Sandsloot Mine, Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Results on sulphide composition and the various styles of mineralisation were analysed to provide an insight into the controls, origin, timing/triggers and physical manifestation of sulphides, and their spatial association, if present, to Platreef PGM mineralogy. Supervisors included Dr Hannah S.R. Hughes and Dr Jens Anderson.Key tasks involved:i. 3 weeks detailed logging of Anglo American core from the Sandsloot property and sample collection for further analysis.ii. Detailed petrographic analysis on the selected core samples to identify and record variations in sulphide mineralogy, style, textures and petrographic distribution of the sulphides in relation to their silicate host-rocks, using optical microscopy and EPMA analysis of polished thin sections.iii. Analysis of sulphide composition for major and trace elements using EPMA and LA-ICP-MS (Dr Ian McDonald, Cardiff University).iv. Use sulphide trace element data acquired from LA-ICP-MS, including semi-metals and precious metals, combined with S/Se ratios to infer the origin of sulphide mineralisation. v. Analysis of the variation in mineralisation along strike through borehole analysis and strategic sample selection, to enable vertical and lateral correlations, if present, to be made.vi. Visualisation of results alongside Anglo American core logs and assay data.vii. Collation and use of published literature to provide an added perspective on the data generated. Show less
