      Activities and Societies: Phi Beta Kappa, University Scholar, graduated cum laude with honors in Classics I transferred into Washington Square College in 1962. I studied with Francis (Frank) E. Peters and in my senior year co-taught a graduate level course in Hellenistic Judaism. My primary interest while at NYU was in Hellenistic Near Eastern history and religion.

      Activities and Societies: National Defense Education Fellowship (1966-1969) My main interests at Stanford were in linguistics, history, and literature. I studied with Andrew Devine, Brooks Otis (my dissertation advisor), Lionel Pearson (Greek prose), Ron Mellor (Roman history), and T.B.L. Webster (art and archaeology). In keeping with those tumultuous times, I also had a keen interest in social issues, particularly Homeric society and ancient slavery.

      I was science writer in the Department of Public Affairs, responsible for reporting new advances in research and treatment to the general public. My greatest achievement was in writing the first description for the lay public on the discovery of tumor necrosis factor in 1975.
