The private view and launch of Black history season brought in the largest BME audience to record into the museum on one occasion. Here I developed research of their black visual arts collection and found some unknown paintings from Mexico called “Casta Paintings”. These are the first form of racial classification found developed in early 19th century and are depicted in portrait forms. These paintings are of considerable worth to the museum and before my identification of them, the museum was unaware of what they were. I have had the opportunity to deliver presentations on this subject nationally and developed a website to highlight their beauty and relevance to contemporary society. Show less
