But not only did they give them land. They built land grant colleges with government money to teach them how to farm. Not only that, they provided county agents to further their expertise in farming. Not only that, they provided low interest rates in order that they could mechanize their farms. Not only that, today many of these people are receiving millions of dollars in federal subsidies not to farm, and they are the very people telling the black man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968The University of Connecticut is a public land grant university originally founded for agriculture. I am proud to say I didn’t need any bootstraps but I pulled myself up. Show less

      Sept 2020 - Jan 2022
      Supply Chain Leader

I was an overnight production manager of 120+ employees at a transitioning recently acquired Frito Lay facility in Middletown, NY after returning from nearly a year on active duty with the US Navy. This was a great opportunity to grow for me as many responsibilities were to be had as we continued through staffing outages caused by COVID-19. I learned basic mechanical skills for our industrial machines, boilers, and air compressors. I managed various teams unrelated to my own production departments due to working off hours including maintenance, warehouse, and quality assurance. I became authorized to be a hiring manager during my shift as a production manager so I could try to replenish my dwindling staff during the pandemic as quickly as possible. I divided my time between virtual interviews and managing my floor staff. I trained staff in multiple departments. I selected and developed leaders for the floor. I’m OSHA-10 and CPR certified and have had to react to many emergency situations at late night and early morning hours. I often had to use quick thinking to revise production schedules in order to compensate for missing materials or large staffing outages. I developed SOPs for our plant sanitization schedule. I enforced better safety standards in the facility by documenting any and all hazards encountered on a daily basis. I heavily encouraged our HR team and assisted with the roll out of our reasonable suspicion testing program after several incidents. I have advocated for the disabled employees on my team after learning how best to accommodate their needs. I have helped mold the careers of some of the hardest workers I’ve ever worked with in my entire life. During my time at work, I’ve spoken to more police, firefighters, and paramedics than ever before in my life in high stress situations. This was a very difficult position but the experience was breathtaking. Show less
