  Paula worked with a team of space physicist, and developed a couple of programs to visualize in 3D the large and complex data set produced by their space weather models. The visualizations were cutting edge (at the time) and well received by the scientific community. She enjoyed being part of the cross-functional team of professionals and producing results which were published and presented at technical conferences.

  EFPPS/WebAppsPaula J. Reitan was senior developer, team lead, and subject matter expert on the Electronic Federal Payment System (EFPPS) project which processes more than $1.9 trillion annually. Paula led many successful java migration initiatives on the EFPPS backend, including migration of two enrollment services from LAP to CLAS. Paula redesigned the backend using object-oriented design principles to promote package/class re-use, maintainability and sustainability. Paula vastly improved the throughput for credit card validations and entity enrollments using multiple threads and a more efficient procedure. These improvement resulted in the EFPPS being able to "keep up" with credit card validations and entity enrollments during heavy FS load, preventing P1 tickets incurred in previous filing seasons. This is just one of many examples of improvements identified, analyzed, designed, implemented using automated test driven design, documented and led by Paula during the backend java migration process. Show less ALERTS/ETC Paula was a senior software engineer, team lead and subject matter expert on Automated Labor and Employee Relations Tracking System (ALERTS) project. Paula lead the team's modernization effort to refresh the UX and simplify the application code to improve it's understandability and maintainability. Paula also led the team’s successful merger of Employee Tax Compliance (ETC) with ALERTS, eliminating 1 system and several IT positions at an estimated $650K annual savings to IRS and taxpayers.
