  • Experience

    • STC Telecommunications Ltd

      Sept 1984 - Dec 1990
      Principal Design Engineer
    • Nortel Networks

      Jan 1991 - May 1996
      Principal Design Engineer

      • Experience of all aspects of logic design on a series of ASICs and FPGAs targeted at telecoms transmission products, especially SDH systems.• Led a team of engineers designing a set of FPGAs required for an access multiplexer project.• Successfully devised and implemented the scan-based test strategy for 2 ASICs in a chip set used in SDH products, drastically improving the fault coverage of previous versions of these ASICs.• Conceived and implemented a method for de-bugging the operation of a DPLL in an SDH application. As a result a major design flaw was corrected.• Managed the introduction of VHDL simulation and synthesis tools to BNR Europe, leading to widespread acceptance of VHDL by design engineers in the UK.• As a member of the “CAE Tools and Methods” group, designed portions of many ASICs, thus demonstrating effective design methodologies to other engineers. • Atmel Corporation

      May 1996 - Mar 1997
      Field Applications Engineer

      • Pre- and Post-sales technical support to cell-based ASIC customers.• Performed place & route on customers’ ASIC designs, resulting in successful silicon implementations.• Convinced a major customer through technical presentations and meetings to award a substantial design win to Atmel.

    • Toshiba Electronics UK Ltd

      Mar 1997 - Jan 2001
      Senior Applications Engineer

      • Post-sales technical support to ASIC customers.• Devised and implemented memory BIST strategy for customer designed ASICs.• Performed STA using Primetime on customers’ designs to support ASIC sign-offs.• Designed a 128 bit wide SDRAM, by coding & synthesising interface logic to a Toshiba embedded DRAM cell, to satisfy a customer’s request for a technical proposal.• Managed post-sales technical contacts with customers, leading to successful completion of projects.• Wrote and presented training courses for Toshiba in-house software. • LSI, an Avago Technologies Company

      Feb 2001 - Mar 2003
      Senior Design Engineer

      • Initially working as an ASIC design engineer in LSI Logic’s Mint design services organization.• Verification work, using Modelsim & Specman, on an SoC design targeted at 3G handsets.• Later transferring to a design group focusing on ASSPs for the STB market.• Devised test-benches and C code to generate test patterns aimed at identified fault coverage issues in SoC designs. The patterns dramatically reduced the number of defective devices reaching customers.

    • Beach Solutions

      Jun 2003 - Feb 2006
      Technical Account Manager

      • Pre- and post- sales technical support for an EDA start-up producing software to ensure consistency between hardware, software, verification and documentation views of an SoC design.• Designed customised enhancements to Beach’s products for major customers.• Developed and presented training courses and demos for Beach’s products.• Devised and presented demonstrations of Beach’s products at exhibitions including DATE & DAC.• Produced on-line demonstrations of Beach’s products using Techsmith’s Camtasia Studio software.
