      M.Chem. placement and holiday / part-time work

M.Chem. industrial placement during the second half of 1999. I developed an etch solution and procedure for gallium-lanthanum-sulfide (GLS) glass preforms, in order to improve their surface quality, which is of importance when drawing into fine glass fibres for optical applications.I also spent the summer prior to my Ph.D. working at the ORC, followed by another couple of short term contracts following completion of my Ph.D., when I investigated the production of GLS glass microspheres and investigated their properties using lasers and scanning electron microscopy. Senior Scientist

I currently work in the Feasibility team within Combustibles Discovery. I am responsible for delivering the Proof of Application (PoA) of new consumer relevant technologies.I am the Convenor of the ISO Ad-Hoc Group "Substrates". This group aims to improve the ISO 12863 standard test method for cigarette ignition propensity by defining a technical specification for the LIP substrate. Prior to taking up the role of Convenor, I was the Group's Coordinator from 2012 until 2015, during which time I planned, organised and coordinated interlaboratory studies with numerous laboratories worldwide, in addition to chairing one of the Group's meetings. I also present updates on the progress of the group to the ISO WG15 and to the British Standardisation Institution's AW/40 Committee.Until May 2015, I worked in the Science & Feasibility team within the Combustibles Discovery group, where I line managed three scientists, who were working in the diverse fields of chemosensory science and toxicant management. I was a Subject Matter Expert in cigarette paper and LIP and led and successfully delivered a number of cross-functional projects and cigarette paper supplier qualifications. My work also involved the feasibility testing of toxicant management technologies and using statistical experimental design to plan and undertake scientific studies.I represented BAT at the CORESTA Diffusivity Task Force and LIP Monitor Task Force meetings between 2010 and 2014. I have also presented my research work at the Tobacco Science Research Conference (TSRC) in 2009 and the CORESTA conferences in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Show less
