While still a PhD student, and already contracted by the University, I projected and built a metal flume including masonry work for pumps, electrical and refrigeration installations, which impulse geometry allowed to maintain a continuous surface for the flowing water along the whole water trajectory. The theoretical formulation (having a strong thermodynamics inspiration) unified empirical and semi-empirical conclusions of the experimental study and of the literature, constituting a more complete vision for the constitutive equations existing in fluid mechanics. PhD degree received with Distinction and Praise. The results in air-water mass transfer showed that the transfer coefficient was dependent on the 1/4th power of the energy dissipation in the lab flume, coinciding with the prediction of the new proposed turbulence formulation, given in the form of the classical thermodynamic formulation. The formulation enabled the unification of a large quantity of empirical evidence. Show less

MSc Hydraulic Engineering and Sanitation Maximum note, with mentions of distinction and praise

My study focused on turbulent air-water mass transfer, and proposed a statistical method for quantifying mass transfers named “Random Square Waves” method. The MSc Degree was received with Distinction and Praise. From the experimental part of the study, the mass transfer coefficient obtained in a rectangular water tank correlated with the water flow rate, as usually tested back then. But a discussion was included about the inconvenience of using centrifugal pumps in air-water experiments due to the oxygen sink effect of the pumps. A quantification of the O2 desorption for correcting the real interface oxygen absorption was presented. Finally, the study of a solid being dissolved by the same turbulent movement that incorporates oxygen into the water produced a good correlation between solid and gas transfer coefficients. A theoretical proposition for the interdependence between different transfer phenomena was proposed, justifying the obtained correlation (solid and gas transfers). Show less

      Jan 1992 - Jan 1993
      Postdoctoral Researcher

Collaborative study with Prof. Wolfgang Rodi. The theme was the sedimentation in the turbulent recirculation conditions of sedimentation tanks. At that time, the software used to make flow predictions was coined FAST-2D, being the postdoctoral project prepared and conducted to introduce the numerical tools to me, and to allow its further use in Brazil. The sedimentation theme was studied in detail, generating later a new quantification of the phenomenon, based on the energy dissipation of the set of particles. Show less

Coordinating 1) the different sectors of the Department: Research, Education, Maintenance (conservation); 2) the infrastructure activities: Secretary, Laboratories, Accountability; 3) the adequate running of the undergraduate and the graduate engineering and mathematics courses (disciplines) conducted by the department; 4) the allocation of the existent faculty and the hiring of new faculty; among others. As head, I proposed and defended the creation of two Engineering courses in the University of São Paulo: Environmental Engineering (conceived by several colleagues of the department) and Water Resources Engineering (also conceived by several colleagues of the department). The first was approved, and the second was on discussion when my period of head finished (2+2 years, not being legally possible a third period of 2 years as head). Show less

    • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)

      Jan 1998 - Jan 1999
      Visiting Associate Professor

Collaboration with Prof. Gerhard Jirka, having as main objective the design of an experimental device for simultaneous measurement of velocity and mass concentration fluctuations in the immediate sub-superficial region at the air-water interface. The device was constituted of a transparent glass and acrylic tank having a horizontal grid that oscillated vertically. The simultaneous measurements were made possible by the use of either a splitted laser beam operating in two wave lengths, or two different laser beams. The project was successfully supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and furnished the needed tool for understanding more precisely the air-water turbulent interface. Although it was initially proposed to make a series of bi-national joint studies (Brazil-Germany), only one such studies was conducted through a Brazilian Doctoral student supported by CNPq (Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). • University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

      Jan 2006 - Jan 2007
      Visiting Professor

Collaboration with Prof. John Stephen Gulliver studying stepped and smooth spillways, quantifying the absorption of air by water in the form of bubbles and directed to the protection of the slipways. The underlying physical principles were used to model the observed behaviors, which allowed to propose statistical correlations. The study was directed mainly to stepped chutes, although also hydraulic jumps in dissipation basins were considered.

    • University of Alberta

      Jan 2016 - Jan 2018
      Visiting Professor

Collaboration with Prof. David Zhiwei Zhu, studying urban geysers and oscillations in vertical tubes, common in water distribution systems and drainage systems. In this sense, strong theoretical propositions were conducted, for which laboratory experiments were conducted by coworkers of Prof. Zhu, and which data were compared with the theoretical results. A classification of the geyser events was proposed and physical principles allowed justifying some of the observed behaviors.

Research and teaching position in graduate level. The research activities were directed mainly to the study of cavities generated in the soil around water supply installations due to leakage in the installation. The State of Ceará is located in the region of the Brazilian Semi-Arid, and water losses are a serious question in this region, as well as structural problems that arise from the leakages. The teaching activities were on pollutant transport in the environment.
