Hired in 2007 as the department's history of Northern Ontario specialist, my teaching and research have generally explored various aspects of the economic, labour, political, and social history of Northern Ontario and Canada. Other areas of teaching and research also include Canadian (primarily Ontario) resource development and film history. I have also been the historian for a number of collaborative projects completed in partnership with Indigenous communities in the 1850 Robinson-Superior and Treaty 9 areas. Show less Part of the External Relations Senior Leadership Team, as an External Relations Associate I reported directly to the Vice-President (External Relations). My duties included Alumni Engagement and Prospect Pipeline and Government Relations, assisting in building the Ambassador Program, enhancing graduate alumni engagement, international chapter development, alumni outreach in Northwestern Ontario, assisting the Director of Government Relations with various files, and providing the Philanthropy group with donor prospect lead generation. Show less Administratively responsible to the Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities, I provided academic leadership, represented the Department of History (including Religious Studies and Northern Studies programming) on our Thunder Bay, Orillia, and Online campuses, and worked to achieve progress and development in all matters affecting the academic life of the Department, the Faculty, and the University. Main duties included supervising faculty, staff, students, and programs; planning and development of academic programs; representing the Department inside and outside the University; preparing budget estimates for submission to the Dean; and administering authorized budgets. I previously also held the position as Chair between 2012 and 2016. Show less For a decade I co-ordinated the Interdisciplinary Programs (HBA, HBSc, and Minor) in Northern Studies. Offered as part of the University of the Arctic's (UArctic) Circumpolar Studies consortium, the programs focussed on topics relating to northern Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, issues and environments of Canada's provinces and territories, and other circumpolar regions. In addition to in-class learning, students also had the opportunity to participate in the North2North student mobility program, allowing them to spend a 4-8 month term studying abroad at a University of the Arctic partner institution.Administratively responsible to the Dean of Science (until 2015) and Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities (and Vice-President Research until 2012), I provided academic leadership, represented the Department, Program, or School, and worked to achieve progress and development in all matters affecting the academic life of the Department, the Faculty, and the University. Located in every province of Canada, and abroad, the Wilson Associates have been selected as scholars who are pushing the field of Canadian history in exciting new transnational directions. Each of these dynamic scholars is asking new questions and bringing new perspectives to the writing of Canadian history. Between 2017 and 2020 I was also one of the 39 inaugural Wilson Associates. Founded in 2008, the Wilson Institute for Canadian History (then called the Wilson Centre) is named in honoured of its main donor, L.R. (Red) Wilson. It was created with a simple vision: rethink Canadian history, pre- and post-Confederation, within a transnational framework. We seek to understand Canada’s place in a global perspective and how Canada has influenced – or been influenced by – transnational phenomena. Show less
