I read hundreds of books in various fields, from classical fiction to modern history and particle physics to American politics, that expanded on my comprehensive curriculum of mathematics, chemistry, biology, history, politics, grammar, literature, and so much more. A critical part of my education was detailed oral presentations. I wrote and presented dozens of essays and reports, culminating in my 8,000-word thesis in 2019 on 1970s U.S. foreign policy strategy. Dozens of museum and travel trips opened my mind to new ideas and experiences, including Seattle's Museum of Flight, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Vancouver's Science World, to name a few. Finally, I captained a youth soccer team for four years in Puyallup, Washington, learning team leadership, personal mediation, discipline, communication, work ethic, and perseverance. Show less

It was my honor to receive this award with my colleague Cleo Kuk, who I had been working closely with to advance racial and educational justice in the Yakima School District within the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council and the Equity Coalition. This Coalition was targeted to research, develop, and present a comprehensive equity policy for the school district, and I was a member of the planning team and policy-writing subcommittee that drafted the policy's language with a four-pillar structured focus on Climate and Culture, Leadership and Partnerships, Talent Recruitment and Retention, and Teaching and Learning. We engaged with numerous stakeholder groups, including La Casa Hogar, L4L Cohorts at the University of Washington, and the diverse membership of the coalition. Studying numerous exemplar policies from around Washington State and reading various instructional texts on co-design and racial equity, we created a policy that reflected the needs of our community and improved upon other schools' past efforts. After 6 months of these policy discussions, exchanges, and development processes within the Coalition under the supervision of Superintendent Dr. Trevor Greene and Executive Director of Racial and Educational Justice Dr. Marcus Pimpleton, Cleo and I took the lead on presenting the completed policy in May and June to various leadership groups inside and outside of the District, sharing it with Leadership Tomorrow, UW L4L 2021 Cohort, YSD Business Partners, and more. We had bilateral dialogues with each Yakima School District Board of Directors member, securing wide support after deep policy-focused discussions resolved their individual questions or minor concerns and reaching a 5-0 unanimous vote of approval on June 15, 2021.
