An Examination of New Zealand Musicians in the Digital AgeSupervisor: David JohnstoneMy Master's thesis research project was conducted on New Zealand musicians currently using the site Bandcamp as a tool for promotion for their music. The results of a survey sent to New Zealand artists was analysed in order to determine if any factors could be found to have a significant effect on the number of downloads the artist receives. The results of the study determined that the payment model utilized by the artist was a significant factor in the exposure they received. This research project was extremely well received by my department, receiving the highest possible marks for a thesis. Show less

      Student programmer

The Space Research Center is a division of the University of Michigan College of Engineering which deals with Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences. At the Space Research Center, I worked with the TIDI team, a research group funded byNASA. During my time working with TIDI, the satellite was considered to be one of the top ten most important research projects according to NASA. The satellite's main purpose was measuring atmospheric winds in the mesosphere in order to assist with predicting weather patterns. As a student programmer, it was my job to help the scientists by creating various programs to help visualize the data being collected. The project's website (tidi.engin.umich.edu) contains many of the graphs and programscreated during my time there.Key Responsibilities: · Learning and creating programs in several new programming languages with no previous experience of the language's syntax or abilities. These languages included Perl, Fortran 77, IDL, HTML, and UNIX shell scripts. · Creating programs to produce graphs that helped visualize data that was being received from the satellite. These graphs included contour plots, linear plots, plotting winds onto a global surface, and creating various log scale plots. · Creating an algorithm to determine bad data points across the channels of a measurement by using the previous and future channels in time to determine if the particular channel was contaminated at that instance, without falsely identifying true data as being contaminated. · Writing scripts to assist with daily tasks that needed to be performed. · Reverse engineering research grade code in order to create programs that were more maintainable than those created by the scientists. · Determining a solution to visualize winds on a 2D map of the globe by keeping everything in scale and representing the data in a meaningful and truthful way. FNZ is a financial platform services company that utilises enterprise cloud computing. While working with FNZ, my main focus was on the National Australia Bank solution, which provided a direct-to-customer platform that allows clients to manage their investments and trade on the ASX market. Working on the NAB platform, I was in a unique position to work on both the project and the production support after the system went live. This experience provided invaluable insight into how platforms are used differently by various customers once a platform goes live and how better to support clients in live environments.Key Responsibilities:• Working with developers, architects, customers and build managers to manage requirements and resolve defects in project and production environments.• Documenting new and existing solutions, for internal and external use to ensure that knowledge is available and easy to locate for the lifetime of the platform.• Handle high-pressure, business critical scenarios to ensure that all parties are kept up to date with progress, while assisting developers with debugging issues within the platform and database.• Create, maintain, review, and manage SQL scripts to ensure that they are updating the correct tables and information in the database.• Significant client contact, through bug management software and meetings, where business requirements are translated into technical specifications, and explaining technical details in a language that can be understood by customers.• Performed functional testing on developer fixes before committing changes to code streams to ensure any defects are detected as early as possible in the coding lifecycle.• Worked on issues in a variety of functional areas including, but not limited to, cash, trading, customer management, operational workflow, webservice integration, automated tasks, service packages, monitoring and alerting, portal integration, NFR requirements, and back office functionality.
