While there, I helped implement strategic communications campaigns for clients including the Brookings Institution, MacArthur Foundation, and George Lucas Educational Foundation, and thoroughly enjoyed working in a creative environment.

  The Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives was an office at The White House established by executive order to help community-based organizations, including those motivated by a faith tradition, to better meet America's social needs. This involved leveling the playing field for these small but mighty charitable organizations to compete for resources and support.   The US Department of the Interior protects America’s natural resources and heritage, honors our cultures and tribal communities, and supplies the energy to power our future. I directed a team of seven superb political and career staff members and together we advanced Secretarial initiatives with the private and nonprofit sectors. The most memorable and special was Take Pride in America®, a national service initiative which operated as a public-private partnership program, supported 400,000+ volunteers on public lands, and featured Clint Eastwood as national spokesman.   The US Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Corporate Citizenship Center (formerly BCLC) is a leading resource for businesses dedicated to making a positive difference. I had the pleasure of directing the Business & Society Relations Program, which engaged ~40 Fortune-500 corporate responsibility executives in educating the public on how business is tackling some of the world’s toughest challenges.

  Achieving the Dream

  As Achieving the Dream transitioned from a demonstration initiative into a national nonprofit organization, I was promoted to Chief Operating Officer and tasked with helping lead the national expansion. This included recruiting, hiring, and orienting ~15 new staff members, overseeing all communications and marketing, and helping establish the national headquarters in the nation's capitol - all within 18 months. I am proud to say that Achieving the Dream is a strong and sustainable enterprise that continues to thrive as it leads the nation's most comprehensive non-governmental reform network for community college student success in higher education history.   To achieve its mission, GSK needed to go beyond medicines and address health challenges where they start - in communities. I had the wonderful opportunity of leading the redesign of GSK's philanthropy in the US so that it better addressed health outcomes. I developed pilot programs that incorporated a collective impact approach and invested $10 million throughout four cities. This redesigned portfolio quickly earned recognition as best-in-class and I had the pleasure of sharing our lessons learned at national events, including at the National Academy of Medicine.   The "Carolina Chamber" is the voice for business in Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro. I directed the activities of the external relations division, encompassing government affairs, public policy, and advocacy; community, economic, and workforce development; and strategic partnerships, community relations, and leadership development. I also served as executive director of The Chamber's 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate, called The Partnership for a Sustainable Community (dba The Partnership for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro). After 15+ years working on global and national issues, it was my privilege and pleasure to serve my local community while also earning my doctorate in community college leadership at NC State.
