Once the document system was established (see below) I was moved to the brewery laboratory, carrying out routine tests primarily to monitor site hygiene. I was responsible for preparing teaching materials, leading tutorial discussions, marking student essays, providing feedback on drafts, reporting attendance, and was a point of contact for students. The student body was large and diverse, requiring good interpersonal skills in order to make sure all students got the support that they needed.

    • University of Leeds

      Jul 2014 - Jun 2015
      Research Fellow

I worked as a solo researcher alongside a project leader, in collaboration with scientists and secondary school teachers. In addition to my research I was responsible for making a number of teaching resources for children, disseminating project results, and I also organised a national conference. I turned the conference materials into an extensive online resource, including edited recordings of the presentations.

    • The University of Edinburgh

      Aug 2015 - Dec 2017
      Research Fellow

I developed independent research in collaboration with a larger interdisciplinary team, using archival sources and interviews with knowledgeable experts. I was responsible for regularly reporting back to the team concerning my findings, and communicated my results at events all around the world. I took primary responsibility for collaborating with the University comms team in the communication of our results. I learnt new research methods including ethnography and participant observation.

    • The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

      Jan 2018 - Mar 2021
      Research Fellow

In addition to the typical responsibilities of a researcher, I had extensive further responsibilities for administering the project, communicating our results, and managing the project team and budget. I also had primary responsibility for the numerous national and international events that we organised. I was responsible for creating and editing the project website, writing all the copy for it, and disseminating our results on social media. I also took primary responsibility for reporting to our funding body, and ensuring that we complied with all the conditions of our grant. This meant paying close attention to the terms of a lengthy contract. Show less

    • University of Birmingham

      Jan 2021 - May 2022
      Research Fellow

I developed independent research in collaboration with a larger interdisciplinary team. I adopted a range of methods including conducting interviews with subject matter experts and visiting archives. The circumstances of the pandemic also prompted me to learn new digital skills, including geotagging metadata from scientific journals to look for global publishing patterns. The overall project relied on recruitment of members of the public with disabilities, and as such our communication strategy had to be clear and well-coordinated. I communicated the findings of the overall project on social media, in blog posts, and peer-reviewed publications. Show less

    • HM Land Registry

      Jun 2022 - Feb 2023
      User Researcher (HEO)

I was responsible for designing and implementing user research strategies, to ensure the Land Registry continued to improve levels of excellence by adopting a user-centred approach. I was responsible for recruiting users from pre-defined groups, pursuing interviews and focus groups, ultimately analysing the results. This was all done in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary delivery team to ensure my results directly influenced the design of new or iterated services. I presented my research results at daily stand up meetings and in playbacks, and altered my communication style for a wide range of audiences. I engaged actively with the wider UCD community within HMLR and across government, and co-organised a cross-profession workshop for the Analysis Community. Show less

    • IFF Research

      Sept 2022 - Feb 2024
      Telephone Interviewer

As a telephone interviewer I called hundreds of members of the public every week to survey information about their employment, salary, education, caring responsibilities and quality of life. I had to remain professional and friendly throughout, despite often interrupting people at inconvenient times, and convince them to participate. My outputs were quality assured and I was required to complete the work efficiently, thoroughly, and to the Market Research Society’s ethical standards.

    • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

      Mar 2023 - Aug 2024
      User Researcher (SEO)

I lead UCD activities within a multi-disciplinary agile team. My projects have included discovery for a new payment option (recurring payment) which has required collaboration with the Gov.Pay team in the Cabinet Office. We will be the first government department to offer this payment option. I also lead research on our live service via surveys and interviews. My most recent project incorporated market research, completing 100 telephone interviews with fishing businesses to understand their needs when it comes to complying with regulations. I am also attending to internal users of data produced by fisheries enforcement officers, to improve the CRM and dashboards. I regularly conduct remote user testing sessions, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of large data sets. Show less
