      Assistant Manager

Throughout the duration of my employment with this company, I became fully trained in every aspect of the business, which enabled me to easily deploy between areas within a shift. This breadth of experience resulted in me being selected to undertake the management course and consequently promoted to manager status. As the nominated crew trainer, my duties involved training new members regardless of the area of activity, which included informing them of all company policies and expectations. I was also expected to be able to manage any area of the branch, supervise staff, set targets for employees and ensure that the service we provided was always optimised. In this role, I gained valuable transferable skills including; communication, staff management, risk assessment, planning (shifts) and leadership. It was essential that I was able to work on own my own initiative or as part of a team. Show less

In this role, as a customer assistant, I had varied responsibilities: re-stocking the shop-floor, helping customer’s with any problems that may arise and taking a collective responsibility to ensure that store presentation meets the company standard. I enjoy this environment as it has enabled me to engage with people, both customers and colleagues. Overall, it has made me appreciate that working as a team is imperative to keeping everything running smoothly. I feel working here has really given me a new insight into customer satisfaction and I am proud to work for a company with such exacting (high) standards. Working within the public domain demands that you are highly articulate and able to think on your feet. Show less

I carried out my industrial placement year (third year of my degree programme) at British American Tobacco (BAT) in the Group Research & Development department, more specifically I worked in Dosimetry (Aerosol Research & Characterisation). I learned many skills in my time at BAT both interpersonal and technical. I became an effective communicator by the means of presentations, posters etc. I managed a technical project which involved a great deal of responsibility; managing stakeholders, delegating tasks, managing timelines and resources as well as effectively communicating the project outcomes. The technical skills I developed at BAT include numerous technical instruments such as the LM2X - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometer and the Differential Mobility Spectrometer as well as GC-MS and UPLC-MS. • Matchtech

      Aug 2016 - Nov 2016
      Senior Technologist

I was assigned to Research and Development at British American Tobacco on a temporary contract through MatchTech. I was based in the Process & Materials team, where the projects are focused on developing innovative products for five to ten years in the future. My role allowed me to develop my project management skills, as it entails managing multiple projects simultaneously. This enabled me to improve my interpersonal skills, including communicative skills by liaising with stakeholders and external partners. As part of the Process & Materials team it was important that shared tasks were distributed fairly, this involved delegating tasks to ensure that each team member could manage their workload. I also gained numerous technical skills whilst carrying out the practical aspects of projects, for example, synthesis of gel formulations involving the handling of toxic substances. Show less

Working within a team of three on the development of a game-changing platform that will revolutionise the tobacco heating product category, including the development of disruptive heating technologies. I developed an increased understanding of the full product portfolio from traditional products to next generation products. During this time, I built a strong rapport with external and internal stakeholders such as the product stewardship and the sensory teams ensuring frequent communication via telephone and email but most importantly face to face meetings.I gained experience in experimental design using Minitab v17 with support from the statistics team. I have increased my technical skills particularly in the area of Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionisation Detection and the associated Chemstation software. By utilising project planning tools such as MS Project and "Principal Toolbox", I was able to effectively manage my workload and ensure projects were meeting the required deadlines. Also, having the opportunity to become a superuser allowed me to gain a greater insight into project management best practices. Throughout my time in this role, I had the opportunity to pass on my expertise to undergraduate placement students and colleagues working at our Cambridge site. I was also a laboratory owner, liaising with quality assurance and laboratory users to ensure best practices were followed at all times. Show less
