      May 2006 - Aug 2006
      Medical Researcher

I conducted market research within Orthopedics, specifically hip and knee surgeries, looking at device usage and procedural volume at hospitals in the US.

    • Public Health Agency of Canada

      Jun 2006 - Dec 2006
      Research Associate

Projects involved researching problems based on current trends (e.g., obesity in children) affecting the Canadian population. As a team lead, my group developed solutions to these problems based on projections and research. Findings were presented to the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada in Winnipeg.

    • University of Waterloo

      Sept 2007 - May 2011

My doctoral research involved working on several projects at the University of Waterloo examining the influence of driver perceptions (confidence and perceived driving abilities) on driving behavior (and self-regulation practices) in older drivers. My dissertation, funded by CanDrive (Canadian Driving Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly) via the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Schlegel Research Institute of Aging (RIA) and the Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research and Rehabilitation Center, examined the naturalistic driving behavior of drivers with PD compared to age-matched controls using in-vehicle electronic devices (GPS). Specifically, my study was the first study to objectively examine exposure (e.g., days driven, trips, stops, km, duration) and patterns (e.g., night driving, roadways driven, speed regulation, weather conditions and trip purposes) in a sample of PD drivers. • Research Assistant

        Sept 2007 - Dec 2009

      Jul 2010 - Jun 2016
      Associate Research Scientist

Collaborative project between the Research Institute of Aging and the University of Waterloo examining mobility and transportation within retirement facilities. This study examines the transition of older adults moving from community settings to retirement facilities. The primary goal is to determine how mobility patterns in older adults change after such a transition. Our data will help inform retirement facilities on their transportation services (or lack thereof), as well as suggesting changes to existing infrastructure so that older adults can remain as mobile as possible within retirement facilities. These preliminary studies are important in developing more sustainable communities to meet and improve upon the notion of "Aging in Place." Show less

    • University of Florida

      Mar 2011 - Sept 2012
      Post-Doctoral Fellow

My research examined: 1) The role of visual processing/attention on driving performance in drivers with PD funded by the National Parkinson’s Foundation and 2) Driving performance during seizures and the effect of anti-epileptic drugs on driving performance in individuals with Epilepsy funded by the Densch Epilepsy Fund. I was also responsible for conducting clinical and neuropsychological evaluations on older drivers with neurological/neurodegerative disorders. I am also a Co-PI on a study examining the efficacy of exercise on cognitive function and driving performance in older adults, funded by NIH. Show less

    • McMaster University

      Oct 2012 - Jun 2014
Michael G. DeGroote/Labarge Post Doctoral Fellow

I am using 3D modeling software and force plates to quantify falls as older adults exit and enter vehicles. Gaining an understanding of vehicle type, as well as the vehicle’s accessibility, visibility and adjustability may be critical to understanding and preventing falls. The study, funded by the Michael G. DeGroote and Labarge Fellowships, will inform changes to vehicle design to reduce the number of falls from exiting/entering vehicles. Additionally, as McMaster is one of the primary data collection sites for Candrive, I am also involved in examining data from the 5-year longitudinal study of 1000 older drivers. Show less
