  Candidate Geomatics Practitioner - Land Surveying

  The South Geomatics Council is the governing body and custodians for different Professional functions in the Surveying, Geographic Information Science and Photogrammetry and the GISc fields. You are required to complete a term of WIL with them along with the relevant legal examinations before you can qualify as a professional on the level that you are applying for and in the field of your academic competency. The Surveyor General are the custodian of the cadastral data (property data) for the country and serves as the examiner of all cadastral data to be newly established for registration in the Deeds Office. My Candicacy under the South African Geomatics Council was two fold. The first is to become a GISc Professional and the second in for a Professional Land Surveyor. I am currently busy doing both at the same time since my work requires both in the practice where I am currently employed.Main Responsibilities:• Candidacy requiring Work Integrated Learning as set out by the South African Geomatics Council, as well as completion of certain number of days at an Office of the Surveyor General.• The Candidacy is completed after the necessary law examinations. • As part of the candidacy I also engaged with Town Planners, conveyancers, and valuators on the functions they perform to gauge an overview of how to successfully interact with them to support service provision to the clients of the business.   • Johan Deetlefs Professional Land Surveyor: Requires both Engineering and Cadastral Surveying as well as Geographic Information Science. • For Engineering Surveying this involves field work in gathering data up to visualizing using different outputs from plans and diagrams up to Spatial Statistical Data. • Placement of planned structures and the calculation involved in placement in the correct position both horizontally and vertically thus connecting the built features or inside reference frames. • For Cadastral Surveying this includes all legal aspects of boundary surveying from creating the newly established real right in property ownership as well the creation of rights in buildings (immovable property). • It also includes the establishment of both lesser real rights and rights attached to persons not into perpetuity. All the legal processes up to the registration of the rights at deeds office or through contracts are dealt with. • The compilation of all the legal documentation for the cadastral surveying function for the submission to the statutory bodies for approval.• The compilation of computerized soft and hard copy maps with different features relevant to the needs of the client either for visualization and planning or for relative positioning. Also, the connection of these data with different though correct georeferencing and integration into other forms display whether it is mobile or desktop to serve a function of assistance and client service.   • MM Town Planning Services: My functions vary in performing tasks associated with the completion of the application process for both the urban and rural planning tasks. • This is accompanied with the relevant statutory required application tasks such as the motivation for the application as well as the spatial requirements included in the planning along with the visual placement of the process.• We deal with client advising as to what is required and liaise with the entities enacted by law to govern amongst others the functions of access through the roads departments as well as the environmental management functions. These entities is also associated with the service infrastructure and the possible plan for attaining different services either through direct provision or agreement in phases.• Steps required to assure that a property is in line with the current zoning as required. This is set forth by the Spatial Planning Legislation on local (as first instance), provincial and national government spheres. All the development of a property whether it is the division, consolidation or development as required by law is dealt with along with liaising with the relevant infrastructure departments for commentary. • Planning requires that are of spatial delineation for optimum design and applicability either to the need of the client or for the benefit of infrastructure and architectural outcome.
